I have the same problem with the eggs, tried the tweezers but kids wont stay still and says i'm hurting them. I wish someone could come up with another solution to this.

On the subject of the lice :-X though, started spraying a little of the avon woodland fresh skin so soft oil onto the hair daily and seems to be killing the little blighters (the lice not the kids lol) makes their hair smell nice and if you don't over do it give the hair a nice sheen too ;D ;D

I was under the impression that you couldn't see the eggs until after they have hatched. The bits left on the hair are the empty shells.

My method is to wet if not wash the hair every day after the first discovery of the little blighters and then wet comb for as long as my daughter will allow. This continues for at least 10 days as it takes upto 10 days for the eggs to hatch. Then I check once a week - or upon noticing extreme scratching!!!

I haven't used any form of chemical on my daughter's for over 5 years and (touch wood) not had any visitors since the summer holidays - when a child who seems to be permanently riddled with them even though her mother claims to check and clear regulary - came over.

Our school insist on having long hair tied back because they believe (have been told by the council) that it helps stop the spread of nits. Not so. I used to tie my daughters hair - it's way down her back - last year and she was still coming home with them. But the school don't listen as the "council said....." Makes me mad!!

i used a lotion called 'nitlotion - the natural way'. it was made of coconut oil with no nasty chemicals. it said it dissolved the glue holding eggs onto the hair and also suffocated the nits. it worked straight away, i had no problems at all, only used it once (unlike when i'd used fullmarks and got nits back again ten days later). it said you can use a little bit in the hair daily to discourage nits.

Thanks for the tip jellyhead, i'll get hold of some of that and try it out ;D I've also been through cans and cans of the full marks stuff, and it's not cheap, but it's never had any real effect, one of the kids still had them even after rinsing. Why is it we never ask a refund on stuff that doesn't work :-/

Have seen several suggestions involving oily stuff which is probably OK on younger children but if it looks too greasy for your taste then try Quassia chips: I used to buy them from Culpeppers. You steep them overnight, or boil them and allow to cool, then strain. The liquid can then be poured over as a rinse. I also used to spray it onto the hair daily from one of those gardening spray bottles as a deterrent. It tastes very bitter and really does seem to keep the little visitors at bay.

They do eventually seem to grow out of bringing them home!

  • My son and I have very fine fair hair and are always getting nits...My partner who has long curly black hair NEVER gets them, it is so unfair, no matter how much my son and I cuddle him he never gets to join in the great nit killing game... Do you think the nits like fine, fair hair better? On the coconut oil debate, a friend of mine who is afro-carribean says she and her children never get nits, which could be because of the oils they use on their hair, backs up the coconut oil idea - I am definitely going to try that one, perhaps then my son can start growing his hair again!
