First period - recommend a towel?

My DD is 13 and still waiting. For the last 18 months she's had supplies ready in her draw she also has one in a tin (free with bodyform) in her school bag. Most of her friends have started so she should be okay if she's in school, plus they have a school nurse. We are only down the road so she could come home if need be too.
I love the fact the girls are so open about periods now. DD was going swimming and OH remarked "isn't Nia going with you". DD replied "no she has her period". I would never have said that to my mother, let alone my father!
I remember trying tampons when I was about 14 (oh the contortions). Lillets had just introduced the new mini ones. I must have wasted a box trying to get one in:o . I had tried previously with my sister's tampax but caught myself with the applicator and it put me off tampax for life.
I would encourage my DD to go down the tampon route as early as possible as I felt so much more confident when wearing them.

Yeah, Tampax can hurt sometimes!

Did I just admit to that?!

When i used to use tampons, I often smeared the end with vaseline because I got a bit "dry" on taking the previous one out (iyswim!).
Anyway, one day I was in a hurry cos I was dashing out, and I smeared it with Vicks Vaporub! I didn't realise till it was too late:eek:C'est le ton qui fait la chanson0 -

I think I read this advice on here a couple of years ago .I make up a gift bag with a couple of packets of towels, some paracetamol, some chocolate and some posh bubble bath.My 2 DDs were very pleased to receive them and it was a good way to make them feel special without embarrassing them too much.0

I wouldn't have the always silk ones personally. I brought a pack recently and 'lost' one whilst walking around the local shopping centre whilst wearing trousers!!0

Fantastic! A chat thread about sanpro...that should frighten the men off!:p
(I have a work colleague who still uses this tactic if she wants to get the men out of the room. "You'll have to go away now", she says, "we're going to talk about periods, and all the blood.." works every time!)
What was I going to say...oh yes, sorry but it amazes me how many women still use towels. I couldn't, I wouldn't! I know that advice nowadays is that girls starting menarche should not use tampons for the first few months... well, that wasn't me! I was determined I would not wear an adult version of a nappy. I used tampons from the very first.
Sorry to be indelicate, but I just don't know how you can sit there all day in your own mess...no wonder you need the wet wipes!!!

Some of us have no choice but to use nappies. I use the biggest size tampons and the biggest towels and still have to rush to the loo very frequently to avoid 'overflow'. I've never been light enough to use a tampon alone, would have very embarrasing problem if I tried . Think yourself lucky!

LOL, do any of your thirtysomething ladies remember the Tampax coupons that used to be in magazines, which you would send off and get a box of tampax and a pink plastic tampon holder in return? The pink holder was meant to be discreet but with every girl at school having one it was kind of obvious you had your period when you went off to the loo holding it:rolleyes:0
