Plusnet charge different rates depending on the competition available to the prospect.
As you have found there is little competition at the exchange, the cheap plusnet deal isn't on offer.0 -
Ah nice to deal with these ethical companies that want to build long term loyalty...0

Best plan is to ring PlusNet and haggle! Plead the poverty and old age of your outlaws etc. You never know, but of course you may lose the Quidco effect!!"0844 COSTS YOU MORE"0 -
Hi all,
Just for info. Since my eldest brother passed away, I try to help my sister in law out with things like what the best deals are (I use MSE as my all seeing oracle for things to do with spending). A couple of years or so ago, I suggested that she moved from talk talk to another provided who were offering what appeared to be a much better offer. She agreed and signed up to it. This hit a problem in that Talk talk refused to allow her phone number to be released to be migrated to the new provider. This was despite that the number was originally a BT number that had been assigned to her and my brother back in the 1970s. She moved to talk talk maybe 10 years ago and they were now refusing to release the number for her to take to another provider.
She was unsure about what to do with this and when talk talk were on the phone to her, she agreed to a revised deal with them (still more expensive than the other deal she had intended to move to). I was very unhappy with Talk talk regarding this. I felt it was inappropriate action to take with anyone on their part. To do this to a retired lady who lives on her, this really seemed to me like dirty tricks. However since she had agreed to a new deal on that phone call with talk talk, I didn't feel I could do much about this at that time.
We are now in a situation where she is out of contract with talk talk and free to move elsewhere in theory. I'll post an update on here to advise if talk talk agree to release the number this time or if they again try to pull the same stunt.0 -

Have a look at this - it might help:

Just tell them you have been on to Ofcom and that they cannot refuse to allow you to take your number with you. Also talk to the intended new supplier and see what they have to say about it."0844 COSTS YOU MORE"0

hi
can anybody help me
I am with BT had phone bill today £75.19 but the calls were only £10
I rang them today asking about cheapest line rental lady said I would have to pay £144 up front for it to be reduced to £11.94 a month
I said my calls for the whole bill is £10 I am charged all that for line rental it is hell of a lot lady was nice said this price I have just said is the cheapest they do
Is it better for me to move to a diff company? I have always been with Bt so it is all new to me changing suppliers
my broadband is with Virgin but they don't do line rental for our area a lot don't
Would be grateful for any advice
thank you0 -
Get a mobile phone, pay as you go with Three calls 1p/min to standard landlines. Where BT scores is calls to 0845/0870/0800/0871 etc, these are really expensive from a mobile. I bypass this by using Skype app on my phone for all those strange numbers (0800 is free on Skype anyway) but maybe that's a bit too techy,0

I'm on the same boat, I don't want to pay £15.95 line rental to BT, and was about to sign up for their advanced line rental which saves £50 a year on line rental. But there's a catch, if you are using BT 1571 voice mail and call id, these will be charged extra from Feb 2014 which comes to around £3 (1.75+1.75) a month. Not many people are botherd with this, but I do.
So my plan is to switch to the cheapest line rental provider like primus line rental saver £5.99/month and then route my calls via vonage. which will give me unlimited anytime calls plus all the calling features like voice mail -1471, caller display, call waiting and voice mail to email and plus you can download their app to your smartphone and use the minutes through wifi or cellular service, which is brilliant. Vonage £6 a month but if you pay yearly its only £5 a month.
My dad is using vonage since 2005 and you need a broadband connection for vonage to work, and then use your std telepone can plugin to your box. The call quality is superb, better than traditional phone. So £11.99 a month its all sorted.0 -

The problem is for most of us that we need the home phone for a Broadband connection. Your only bet is to check around to see who offers the best deal., but the only way to reduce line rental is to pay up front, that is unless you are prepared to go to a company like Primus who get such bad reviews on this forum. I was with them once but never again."0844 COSTS YOU MORE"0
