I'm curious as to what happens with my Virgin contract after the initial 12 months is up...Do they (Virgin) automatically have to renegotiate a new contract or if nothing is done do I automatically just get lumbered with a 'new contract' ?
  • you enter a rolling contract which either you or Virgin can cancel, without penalty, having given each other 30 days notice.

Thanks Zapp. So at the end of 12 months, I will have to cancel or renegotiate.

You don't have to cancel or renegotiate.

If you do nothing, you simply remain with VM on whatever package it is you get - or whichever package you change too if on a special 12 month offer package.

Most people after the 12 months do nothing and then for years and years do nothing.

Hence you get threads like this where people have spent years doing nothing and find new customers get special offers, so old customers pay more than new - so this is why people negotiate to get a better package / price.

Some of us (like myself) are on the phone as soon as the initial 12 month offer is up / almost up to get an extension of the offer or a better one.

You don't have to call up and do anything at 12 months - the the vast majority of people don't however it's usually in your financial advantage to do so and get a better deal or keep your current deal.

Okay, im looking at getting vergin, mostly because i dont have a BT line connected to the house. In theory the site says this:
10mb connection for 8£ a month if i sign up to a 11£ a month Virgin landline. Making it 19£ in all.
I want to add the TV package to that which is free if i sign up to the 11£ a month Virgin landline package.
Final cost for these three? 27£!
Why? I am already signing up to the virgin landline with my broadband. So i should get the TV connection free. Making it 19£ a month. But when i try to check out online. Everytime it automatically adds an extra 8£ on a month. When it should be free.
    Anyone explain?

Free 'M' TV is only available when you pay full price for a service or on the £3 for £30 type offerings, not when you are a new customer taking up a discounted offer. £8 for broadband is a discounted offer.

If you only have the £11 phone-line then that's the full price for that, so you can get the 'M' TV for 'free' however add on a discounted offer - £8 10Mbit (or 4Mbit in not yet upgraded areas) and you then can't get the 'M' TV free.

Just spoke to their customer man online and he said that getting one offer canceels out the other. But if i sign up to the broadband+lanline at 19£ a month. Hold that for a few weeks, then call up customer services and say i would like to add the Free TV package and i shouldnt have to pay cause i already have the phone line, they might add it on for free. A little pressure and it will work, those were his words.

Does anyone know what would happen if i got a V+ box second hand and installed it myself? All i have to do to get it running owuld be to call up and ask them to charge an extra 5£ a month? or are there extra costs? the customer service man didnt know...

There's no point in getting a 2nd hand V+ box, as they remain the property of VM at all times and you could get yourself in all kinds of mess. VM only lend you the equipment whilst you are a customer. The box would be de-activated, you could call up and try and get it activated, however it would cost you the same £150 service charge, plus they wouldn't activate that one anyway as it would have to go back to base to clear any debts on the box, clear any other info on the box and make sure it's not been used fraudulantly. A VM installer would come out with a box.

I understand. I have the XL tv plus XL internet. At the end of the 12 months I just want to retain the internet. That is why I'll renegotiate.
  • Existing Customer Virgin Media
    • Paying £17 for 2meg Virgin Media broadband
    • Rang Virgin Media 0845 454 1111. Followed cancel account choices
    • Said cancelling because had £7.50pm for 2.8meg (by Three Mobile)
    • They offered £10pm
The Three mobile half price account actually only runs at 800k on a good day and is limited to 5gb, but at 3.5 (HSPDA) can be used in any major City or near Motorways.

Its swings and roundabouts. If Virgin Media had offered the £10 before I wouldn't have gone looking, so they lost out by charging existing customers twice the price (presently they offer £9pm to new customers) and giving me the run around three times during the first year.
