If you look on the VM website 50Mb BB, TV xl and phone L is £43.60 + £15.99 line rental = £59.59. Phone and tell them that you want the lower price and your broadband upgraded.

thanks for that. I saw what you mean. It's a bit like the phone line rental saver though, in that once you log in, you can't see that anymore! Am also finding it impossible to find anything about how long the contract is and when it is due to end. Frustrating. Looks like I'm going to have to ring them next week sometime. I'll have to see when I have a couple of hours to spare :rotfl:

I'll ask about getting me on to the line saver payment up front thing, and see if I can get a loyalty discount. Won't bother asking about the broadband upgrade, as the speed is pretty much irrelevant to me. Thanks.

I just bagged myself (what I think is!) a pretty decent retention deal. I was paying:

    £38.49/Month
60Mb Broadband (Was gonna be boosted to 100Mb in July)
    Basic Telephone (Weekends Free)
    SuperHub 1

I called to cancel and they offered me:

    £26/Month
    100Mb Broadband
    Basic Telephone (Weekends Free)
    SuperHub 2 (Free)
    12 Month Contract

I refused and gave them my notice. They called me back 2 days later and offered me:

    £21/Month (+ 1 Month Free - Effective: £19.25/Month)
    100Mb Broadband
    Basic Telephone (Weekends Free)
    SuperHub 2 (Free)
    12 Month Contract

But I negotiated harder, because I wanted the 152Mb, they initially offered it for £26/Month, but I wanted no more than £23/Month, so I persisted and settled for:

    £25/Month (+ 1 Month Free - Effective: £22.91/Month)
    152Mb Broadband
    Basic Telephone (Weekends Free)
    SuperHub 2 (Free)
    12 Month Contract

Not interested in TV and the telephone I only use for incoming calls.

When I call them I insist that I am not going to agree to an 18 month contract right at the start of disussing options and prices. I pay line rental upfront so I am already showing that I'm prepared to be a customer for a further 12 months. No need to take out a new contract really as you are just asking for your services to be at their own advertised cost. According to their own website they are overcharging you and providing a lower BB speed for the privelege.
If you are wanting a better deal than the price they advertise then be prepared to haggle over the contract. As you are thinking of paying line rental and if you are sure that you will want them to provide your BB and tv then you may have a better chance of a deal if you take a new 12 month contract. My advice is do not agree to an 18 month one though as you will want to renegotiate when your line rental is due to be renewed.

Again, if you 'cancel' and get the call back you get the best deals, they in my experience never have a new minimum term applied to the contract you agree , and if they do that minimum term is only 12 months - 18 month minimum terms to an existing customer are usually only against the phone line.

Thanks. I can't see the deal on the website that you mentioned earlier, BUT, I can see that the premier collection is advertised at £52 plus £15.99 line rental. That's for new customers, after the half price thing ends. That seems to be what I pay now, but has 50MB broadband, and an extra HD box for another room, whereas I only have one box and 20MB broadband. I don't want or need faster BB, or another box. So I'm just going to ask for a reduced bill :rotfl:

My partner and I are going to be moving house at the end of our current tenancy. We only have 30mb internet, in his name. The contract for this will expire the same time as our tenancy.

Would it be better for him to ring up and try to get a retention deal for when we move, or for him to 'refer' me as a friend and I open up a contract in my name in the new place? I have had a contract with them before in my name, the year before my partner's.

I just resent paying so much for the internet, but as we don't use a phone line VM is our only real option.

Technically, as long as you are using a service form a provider you are always in a contract, you are 'contracting'. What they have is a 'minimum term' to which you agree you will stay with them, even when the minimum term expires and you go onto a monthly rolling contract you still need to tell the 30 days in advance of any cancellation.

With VM you can move house and take your service with you even during minimum term , provided the area you are moving to is cabled , of course, but this will start a new minimum term

I know that, perhaps I should have used a different word to contract. We were only signed up to a minimum 12 month term as we knew there was the possibility of moving after a year.

I was just asking what my best course of action would be; threaten to leave via my partner to try and get some form of retention deal and take the internet with us, or to use the 'refer a friend' system to effectively sign me up at the new house as a new customer.

If there is a way of saving a few pounds I'll go for it :money:

Sign up as a new customer, go through cashback and you should get a good deal. You would struggle relocating and getting a retention deal.

As for the new minimum term when you retain, it isn't set in stone, you can bargain with them to have no minimum contract term.

Have switched back to Virgin Broadband after being on Sky and was offered by Virgin - pay £128 phone line rental up front for 1 year (instead of £15.99 pm). That's a saving of £63.88!!! Great saving :j :j Have told friends who have gone for it also, it's called the Line Rental Package I think. Just say you want to pay £128 for phone line rental. You pay on your card not on your bill.
