I just phoned them up and decided to opt for the "change your package" option than retentions.
Currently on:
M Phone (evenings + weekends)
Caller ID
XL (20Mb) Broadband
No TV
£36.99
I was offered a new 12month contract changing my XL BB to XXL BB
Extra costs was £5 / month but there was an extra £5/month for the first 6 months. So essentially, it's free for the first 6 months, then a fiver a month afterwards.
She did say that I needed a new Supermodem and although installation is free, there's a £30 one-off charge to supply the modem and comes insured / warrantied for any damage or failure.
Unfortunately, because I apparently need this new supermodem, they need to send an engineer around and I couldn't tell her when I'd be in. I did ask if she could have it posted out to my work address and although the thought it was possible, she didn't have the option on her screen as we went through the order.
So for the moment, I've put the upgrade on hold until I can confirm when I can have an engineer come round. She did put the discussion and deal in my account notes so I can phone them up in the next week and have the same deal offered without having to go through it.
I thought it wasn't a bad option. OK, there's a £30 charge for the modem and overall, throughout the year, once you put all the costs in, it ends up being a fiver extra which isn't bad for a 20Mb to 50Mb upgrade
tfboy - this is unlikely to be the best deal that VM can offer you.
You need to phone up again, press the relevant option "to leave VirginMedia" and go through a discussion with the Customer Service Operator. Insist that you want to serve your 30 day notice (i.e. DON'T accept any deals from the Customer Service Operator). Then wait....
You should get a callback from the outbound Virgin Media Retentions team who will offer you a much better deal to stay with VM than the standard Customer Services team can offer. Worst case is you cancel your 30 day notice at day 28 (make sure you put a note in the diary).0 -
Has anyone got the 'get straight through to retentions' number?:o0

Hi there,
I currently have my internet and phone line (unlimited calls + broadband + line rental) with BT for £26.90 and also have M TV package with Virgin (along with the Asian pack) which costs £23.50 a month. I also have a Sky TV contract which I plan to cancel very soon; what I really want to do is combine all my internet phone and TV packages into one with Virgin, but I have a dilemna as to whether I should accept the standard cost they're offering at the moment, or wait it out 4 months when my TV package with them will be at the end of it's contract and hope to get a better deal.
They've offered me at the moment, for XL BB, unlimited anytime calls, line rental, and M tv package + Asian pack for £52/month in an 18 month contract. That's basically what I pay for Virgin + BT as it is, but with a better broadband service which I would appreciate. Do you think I'm likely to get offered something more competitive in 4 months when I can cancel my contract with them?
I called Sky to see what they'd offer me, since I am out of my contract period, and they offered me unlimited broadband, calls, line rental, my current entertainment TV pack, and an extra HD box with multiroom (I already have one Sky + box) for £45/month in a 12 month contract; that seems like a good price, but I prefer Virgin for broadband and better channels; of course it has the downside of not being able to record stuff in the deal they offered me.
Do you think Virgin will offer me something better 4 months down the line? I don't like the idea of waiting it out, because the BT broadband is pretty poor, but if I'm likely to be offered something a lot more competitive I probably ought to! If they'd throw in V+ at the same cost of £52 I'd gladly accept!
Thanks!0 -

Is this a good deal as I wanted a faster speed. We do not have a hub or v+ box.
I rang and told them I was thinking of leaving and they just told me that I could get a faster speed of 20 for £53.99.!!!!
Had trouble with email recently and their customer service is the pits.
many thanks for your help - hopefully
Hi, I am on exactly the same package as you. I'll be phoning tomorrow to cancel as Sky are offering a slightly better deal at the moment by £4/month.0 -
From what I can see some people are paying waaaaaaaayyyyy too much for their services from vm this is how my experience went.
Joined vm last year on m tv, l broadband and m phone and line rental for 30 pound a month with standard vhd box and standard wireless router etc. After a small price increase and the increase in vat this changed to 33 a month.
Had every intention in switching to sky. So phoned up and booked cancellation for the end of my contract date. And was waiting to contact sky to book an installation date.
After booking cancellation Virgin media retentions tried ringing 20 times in one week whilst I was at work and wouldn't speak to girlfriend as she isn't the account holder.
When I finally spoke to them I spent a good hour on the phone haggling going back and forth with the guy on the phone and I now have:
TV XL plus a free TiVo box plus the old Vhd box in the bedroom. XL broadband plus a free new superhub and L calls and line rental all for 43 pound a month. They did want to charge me 50 quid for the Tivo box but after I kept saying if it wasn't for the 50 quid for the TiVo box id stay but other than that I was going to leave I got it for free.
12 month contract but the deal applies for 2 years. Even the guy on the phone suggested I phone up again in 12 months and renegociate for a better deal.
All in all quite happy with the new deal and will be calling up soon to add sports pack ready for the start of the premier league season0 -
Managed to get a new deal, after my initial 12 month contract ran out a week or two ago.
Was on:
BB: L (10mbit)
TV: M+
PH: M
== £32.49 /month
Called to cancel my account on Monday with intention to switch to BT Infinity when it rolls out here — I'm a web developer and work from home so I need a faster connection. So they arranged collection of my equipment for 30 days time and that was that.
Had a call back Thursday afternoon — "We can upgrade your internet to 50meg, keep your TV and Phone the same for £37 /month".
I went on to say I was looking to get Freeview+ to record tv etc, so he said he'd throw in V+ HD at no extra cost for the 12 month contract. Sounded good, but I told him I was looking at more £28 /month with BT.
A few minutes later he came back with:
BB: XXL (50mbit)
TV: M+ with V+ HD
PH: L
== £34 /month
Thanks George in retentions!0 -
I have been on
xl phone
xl bb 20mb
m+ tv
V+hd box paying £51.49
Offered same deal for £37.99 6months increasing to £41.99 for 6months on a new 12 month contract.
Not a bad saving and saves the hassle of changing to Sky.
I'll wait and see it in writing though as I have now spoken to 3 people in retentions and been offered 3 different deals! They also include free 0870/0845 which I have since found out is being included from 1st August.0 -
Line rental

2 x V+ boxes (don't fancy being a Tivo guinea pig)

I've got pretty much the same as you except without the sky sports and with two v+hd boxes, and I pay £50.24 a month. And I think I'm paying too much so I'll be renegotiating when my contract ends in August.
Phone them up, you're paying far too much.0
