Further to my earlier post - I phoned up Virgin to confirm my new package and was told the deal was for L Telephone and no XL and then he mentioned the price increase in April so it went up to £47.00 - engineer is coming today to instal V+ box, but will ring up and cancel package and re-negotiate. I don't know how people are getting their services for around £30 a month for XL TV and phone and V+ box.

... by phoning, cancelling and waiting for the call back from retentions (who are not the team you are speaking to when you call to cancel!).

OK thanks for that - but is a call guaranteed from them?
  • I'm two weeks down the line and still waiting on a call from the retentions, department. How long does it normally take?

Just phoned up VM and said the figure quoted was too high for XL TV so we have downdraded to V+ Box, TV M, BB L and phone M as we hardly ever use phone as have so many free minutes on mobile. The fee for this is £31.49 per month plus the £49.95 activiation fee for the V+ Box.

I did ask that we would prefer XL TV but unfortunately what with the price increase in April and an extra £15.00 a month we could not really afford it, so asked whether he could get it lower but he said no, the lowest figure he could get it down to was £43.00 so I declined.

Then cancel! The people you get when you call up do not have access to the best deals, you need to actually cancel then await the call. In most cases they do call back, if they don't you can cancel your cancellation. Over on AVForums before Christmas there was a number published which apparently takes you through to the proper retentions team, if they don't call you back.

Seems to me people are getting better deals than me, I only have the internet and broadband as well. I have been a customer ever since they took over telewest.

What is all this retention business, sounds like you all have 12 month "contracts", whereas I don't have any thing like this

You can only get a retention deal by signing up for a new 12 month contract, but that should come with a better price than you are on now (and seem to be better than new customers from some of the deals on here). You only get the best deals by cancelling and awaiting the call.

I went through with the cancellation and waiting for retentions and waited about 3 days for their first call which I missed.

Its an 0207 number which you cannot ring back,

Stuck it out and they rang me today after day 11. I've been with them since telewest.

I got Virgin + HD box
    Super Hub
    10MB broadband
    L telephone
    Caller ID
    for £32.50 a month
also got £30 off first months bill due to price increases and free installation.

Got what I asked for and I'm happy. Used a comparison of current Sky deal plus current talk talk deal and cashback.

They called usually at 11am and as I have caller ID I knew they'd called and just waited.

Now 3 weeks since cancellation and no callback for me yet. Will have to cancel my cancellation if they don't call soonish. I even called on day 2 to make sure they had my mobile number down, but no missed calls to that number :/
