As you can see from the red - I get nowhere near 10mb :mad:

Dial-up 56k 55 kbits/sec (7 KBytes/sec)
DSL/Cable 256k 250 kbits/sec (31 KBytes/sec)
DSL/Cable 512k 500 kbits/sec (63 KBytes/sec)
DSL/Cable 1mb 1,000 kbits/sec (125 KBytes/sec)
DSL/Cable 2Mb 2,000 kbits/sec (250 KBytes/sec)
DSL/Cable 4Mb 4,000 kbits/sec (500 KBytes/sec)
DSL/Cable 8Mb 8,000 kbits/sec (1,000 KBytes/sec)
DSL/Cable 10Mb 10,000 kbits/sec (1,250 KBytes/sec)
Your connection 2.42Mb 2,478 kbits/sec (310 KBytes/sec)


P.s. make sure you have nothing accessing the internet in the background. e.g. outlook - unknown spyware - or other apps that download or upload. This would significantly slow dow your internet speed.

Seems like my broadband has gone up in the last 1hour, but still, why is it so slow.....less than half of what i upgraded to? I'm on NTL, is it something to do with how far i live from an exchange (or something) if so, how can you check where the local exchange is ?

lately ive only being getting 2meg on a 10 meg service

I've been on NTL 10Mb for about 48hours now and have been running a few speed tests throughout the day, mine seems to vary from 2Mb upto about 6Mb, but still no where near the 10Mb.

Does the speed depend on how far you live from the exchange things ?

Also, whats the highest speeds you've managed to get on your 10Mb line?

No its nothing to do with the exchange as it comes through cables.

I have 2 thoughts.

NTLs equipment is not upto speed.

and secondly it seems to happen at peak periods which leads me to think that its oversubscribed and again NTLs equipment is not up to it.

I currently only have BB with ntl. I have Freeview for my TV and BT for my phone line. With the advent of HD tv, I just want to know my options. I already have the cable wiring for my tv because I used to have ntl digi tv. If I decide I want to go back to them ( because I will eventually want HD TV) do I have to have their phone service as well as I don't really want that?

I've phoned NTL and threatened to leave. Without much resistance I got 12 months 4MB at half price.

I'm still allowed to leave at any time as there is no new contract which is good.
