Having been with NTL for 5 years on their base pack (1 meg broadband, TV and phone) theirty odd quid a month, I decided to do some shopping.
I thought I would get a better deal beacsue I could do without the line rental, but also wanted internet.
BUT.... a call to NTL led to me getting my package knowed back to £20 per month!! :rotfl: I lost a few tv channels that I didn't watch anyway, so I was well chuffed!
It's certainly worth asking them for a discount, maybe with a threat of leaving (which you had better be prepared to follow up on!)
I think someone has given NTL staff happy pills!Don't bother trying to sue me - I've got no money!0 -
Just rung up Telewest, was paying £36/month for Telephone Evenings & weekends, caller display etc (£18.00) and 2mb Broadband (£17.99). Explained, as others have done, that I was considering cancelling especially as BT are now cheaper on Telephone line rental, plus the good deals Sky and Talk Talk are doing.
The customer rep initially tried to suggest that I should stay with TW as they offer a quality service, and if I go down the ADSL route I would be using copper line! And the max I would get would be 1mb! Anyway after a little bit of discussion, where I confirmed I used ADSL on my works line and could happily get 4mb, he explained that Telewest were doubling there cable speeds again from January and would renaming themselves Virgin (news to me!), he then went on to offer me the same Telephone package, with caller display for £12 and the 2mb broadband for £9.99 :j I happily accepted and then asked how long that was for..... good for 12months
Go for it, nothing to loose, everything to gain :-)
cheers

cashless wrote:MB stands for Mega Byte. It just means the amount of information that can be carried by your internet connection every second. 1MB broadband should really be called 1MB/s broadband.
Sorry - nearly but not quite - its Mb/s - Mega bits per second - there are 8 bits in a byte (usually !) - remember this is just the maximum for your link to the local exchange (in DSL world) - lots of variables will make that slower including the number of people competing for the link from the exchange to the Internet, the speed of the connection to the site you are accessing etc etc. - just like a convoy of ships where the speed is that of the slowest ship ! The average throughput to a major site is a better way of assessing how good you connection is - check out https://www.adslguide.org.uk - they use this method (together with customer service, price, features) to assess an ISP.

Thanks All!
Called NTL retentions as was paying £35 for
1MB BB, Talk unlimited eve/we and line rental.
Straight away was offered all above plus 2M for 20.99.
Explained that we tend to make more daytime calls as well so that was added as well.
"If you are still unhappy in 3mths, give us a call and we will see if we can reduce further!"
Well worth a soon-to-be-free call!0 -
I have been with NTL ever since they introduced broadband, In the beginning I had problems but now i was paying for 4MB unlimited 24.99 and I had my telephone with them also, my average bill per month is around 50 pounds. I am also a sky+ user paying around 36 pounds a month. I got a letter from sky for 16mb broadband for 10 pounds, I decided to ditch NTL and requested BT to do all this for me. The good part, NTL called me a few days before i was to switch my telephone number over to BT. I explained that as a loyal customer i am fed up paying way over the odds when the likes of sky and talk talk are in the market. without hesitation I was offered 4mb unlimited and phone uk unlimited, including fee for international calls with caller display paying by DD for 21.50, he told me that this would be for a year, and his system would only allow him to set it for 3 months and he would change every 3 months for the year. I will see how this goes, but for now I am happy and wanted to share this with you all
Good Luck

4mb unlimited at 12.49 half price of 24.99 and for 12 months as said by *** at NTL at retentions she could not offer the 10mb service at this price but did offer it at half price for 6 months.
she sounded new there so kept putting me on hold so need to monitor everything as they might sneak the price in after 6 months and this girl might be balrbing.
Good thing I work on phones cs so i know a trick or two.

Just cancelled NTL today - Moving new house and they are not in that area. But as i have read so many horror stories over cancelling and them still charging you etc, what is the best way to handle this, we pay in advance i think by Direct debit! they told me my final bill will arrive on the 24 of next month, i'll wait for any odd days to be debited then cancel the direct debit, anything else i should do?
Thanks0 -
Hi what with sky bringing out their broadband you pay a one off £40.00 & £5.00 for all your phone calls and you still pay line rental. I rang NTL up and asked if they could match what sky was offering and he said blah blah blah stuff about sky not offering technical support etc etc, but I then said at the end of the day its the customers pocket and people are interested in paying less. He offered me a reduction from my £14.99 broadband 2MB to £11.00, " i said can we make it a nice round number of £9.99 , he first said no then said yes!!!!!, and then he offered me free line rental for a year saving £11.00 a month and free landline calls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, . Also credited account with £15.00 to sort the finance side out, something to do with the billing. He said it would first show up as a 3 month offer on bill, but it is for a year. He said in 3 months he gets a code and goes into my account and extends it further. So to sum it up I would not have been getting free line rental with sky and am with ntl, its swung some roundabouts as the free line rental is worth their free broadband connection and they offered the £5.00 broadband connection reduction so it adds up to the same except I make £1.00 extra & free landline calls everymonth. Also have the added bonus of not switching phone company. In in all am very chuffed and would not have been able to do it without this board and all the things you guys try. Also mentioned somewhere in phonecall that I was calling up as I understand that I have to give 1 months notice to cancel phoneline, a subtle threat !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!XXXXXXXX
I suggest go for it, to anyone else be firm & polite and dont hesitate or sound unsure.
Also it is going up a mb in september , everyones is

phoned up NTL, said I wanted to cancel by tv/BB/Tele.
They said will be done on 25 September. No questions as to why, no incentives to stay. Better phone up BT!0 -

They always ask is there any reason in particular why you are cancelling. What answer did you give them0
