    hi

i have today rung ntl to try and get my 1meg broadband reduced from the current £17.99
my brother and a couple of friends phoned them up threatened to leave and they reduced their monthly payments straight away

the guy i spoke to was having none of it
when i said i could go elsewhere for cheaper he kept saying no you cant

two months ago i took a landline with ntl (didnt want a landline but sky would not install witout a phone line)

so i still have ten months of my phone contract left with ntl

    because of this
has this knackered me from getting my broadband reduced because they know i cant go elsewhere and get broadband because my phone line is with ntl and not bt

    hope this makes sense

    any views welcome

Yes, you would have signed a 12 month minimum contract for your landline so you are probably stuck with them for now. The thing about Sky is galling - they insist on a phoneline purely to get info about your viewing habits (it connects overnight) & (as a secondary) so you can use 'interactive services'. I disconnected the phoneline from sky almost immediately after installation with no detrimental effect & I'd recommend every sky user to do the same - it's like having spyware on a PC. I'd say stick out the 10 months - you're probably losing about £30 over the period? & then tell ntl where to go - there's enough competition around for ADSL & by then you'll have an even bigger choice.

so you have a phone line and 1MB BB with NTL and SKY TV?

that means you'll be paying about £30 ish a month for the NTL stuff I guess? (£18 - BB / £11 - phone)

if you wait for a couple of months the new quad play deals 'should' be running and you 'should' be able to phone up and get switched on to the 2 for £20 option (with phone and BB as the two options) saving £10 per month and in effect reducing your BB costs.

there's also a rumour that the 1MB sevice is going to be upped to 2MB in the not too distant future so that might also sweeten the situation for you.

I recently got my internet access at 2 meg for £9.99 which i was told would be for 6 months then back up to £17.99.

I wont complain at that....unless i can get more off lol

    :)
  • I rang Friday quoting the Sky offer - I have 2 phone lines with NTL and 1M broadband. I got a permanent £4 discount which will remain as long as I'm a customer, and permament weekend calls free to geographic numbers. :j Not bad for a single phone call with no haggling. My wife said I wouldn't get anything before I rang, too:rotfl:.

Rang Telewest today and mentioned the Sky offer. The best they could offer me was:
4mb BB for £9.99 for six month
    Phone line £11.00
    Total £20.99

This actually increases my current cost because I had a offer 3 months ago getting £15.00 for three months for both BB and Phone.
So I had a six pound increase, but compared to the original not haggle price (£36.00 BB at £25.00 and Phone £11.00), I still better off, by £15.01 (I like to mention the 1p cause we are money saving, aren't we. LOL).

The funny this is, is that it seems that they are begging me to switch Phone lines, because there are not reducing it's price, and are not linking it to the BB price reduction (meaning I do not lose the BB offer if I switch phone lines).
I always had the intention of going to Sky's BB, but wanted to give it some time to see how it does and also for it to reach my area. So I really got to thank TW for not keep me to their phone lines. I also wanted the free wireless router.

I'm assuming that for Sky BB, I need a BT Line, which I've got (just not connected), so the reconnection of phone lines should be simply.

This is a bit off-topic, but do I have to be on BT's line for a certian amount of time before I can get Sky BB? Basically should I switch my line rental now, or later, (for me, there is no price difference whoever I go with)?

    Peace

Have read contents of these pages with interest over many months finally decided to see what they would offer me. We have been with NTL forever it seems and have unlimited 4Mb, talkunlimited 24 and family plus sports and movies. Well after 45 mins on the phone for which I get £10 per month for life as compensation, I now have free broadband (£24.99) and a callmobile package (£1.50). A reduction of £36.49 per month. Much more than I was going to achieve with BT lowest package and Orange broadband.Total savings £437.88 per year. Just wish I'd remembered to ask for a free digibox as well!! Keep trying folks.
  • Dont know if this has already been posted elsewhere but I found it by mistake trying to change my package and its a great way to save the cost of the new call charges.

Instead of paying for the customer service 0845 454 0000 number use their free sales line on 0800 183 0123 and press option 3 when prompted and a recorded message will tell you next time to call the new paid for number and then it will put you straight through to customer service for free anyway.

If they can offer new customers and upgrade customers a free call then why not give the same loyalty to their current customers.

My sister was a new customer and got the 3 for £30 offer and I kicked up hell as I had less chanels for more money and have been a customer for 6 years. They reduced me to £25 a month instead of the £39 a month I was paying.

Free call and £14 a month saving. Thumbs up.

  • as you are prob on an NTL line to change ADSL provider would mean switching back to BT.

However, depending on the area you live in you could be getting up to 8mb broadband for £14.99 or maybe even less!
