I rang NTL yesterday to cancel my account, providing the usual 30 days notice as I was keen to transfer to Talk Talk, I figured it was an offer too good to miss and pretty much told NTL that too. I then contatced BT to get my line reactivated to coincide with my NTL disconnection. Today, less than 24 hours later I had NTL on the phone as BT had contatced them regarding porting the number over to then in a month or so.
To cut a long story short, they asked me if I would stay with NTL if they could offer the same package as Talk Talk, free unlimited calls, free overseas calls and free broadband for life for £20.49, that's 50p cheaper than TT. Of course I agreed. Unfortuately they could still only offer me 1Mb BB, but in the 12 months that I've had it it's been absolutely fine and caused me no problems. Also, there is only a 12 month contract compared to the 18 months that TT specify

    I'm one happy bunny

Please could you advise how you went about contacting BT to get your line changed. Did they not commit you? Talk Talk have no instructions on changing over if you are with Telewest/NTL.

    HI

got a really good deal with ntl just now and thought i'd share it

    was on
    base tv + 1mg broadband + line rental 5p talk plan - 3package discount
(£9.49) . total £30/month as well as add on call costs (up to £20/month)

    nice man at ntl offered
base tv (£9) + 1mg broadband (£16) + free talk unlimited (24 hour free local and national calls) and to maintain my discount of £9.49

total £15.50 for same package as talk talk (£21) (except international calls and 8mg vs 1mg broadband, both of which are irrelevant to me, but including digital tv)

this is for 12 months but then to assess options

seemed to offer it readily and so would appear to now be a standard deal if you ring up to cancel
  • Further to NTL's policy of not refunding this money, I asked to speak to a supervisor and was promised a call back within 24 hours.

24 hours and 5 minutes later, I rang again to find out why they'd not phoned me, a very nice woman called back within the hour & said that she could refund me 6 months, but 'I could take it further',
    'What', I replied, 'Sue you?'
She suggested that I could speak to her manager or possibly go to citizens advice. I replied by saying that I would like to speak to her manager, but (and here's a line I will be using again & reccomend to everyone)
didn't need to go to citizens advice as I am a solicitor!

I'm not, but got a call back the following day offering all of my money back in the form of a cheque.

    Result!

I rang BT and asked them to reconnect my line as we were with them previously. The minimum contract with BT is 3 months, but if, for example, you say that you'll be letting the house out and the tenants won't be using BT, they charge between £8-12 for terminating the contract early. Remember to connect with TT and I believe they will do all the cancelling for you.

As for NTL/Telewest offering me an unbelieveable deal, I double checked it as it seemed too good to be true and it looks like it is. The chap who rang me and offered to "match" TT is now denying it, and refuses to contact me. I know he said that international calls were free, as I asked him about 3 times. I now have an assurance that he will definitely call me next week. Oh, and they also offered me a free month worth £20.50 while I decide whether to cancel my contract with them!!!!

Telewest deals are NOT always what they seem.
I moved house in January and arranged a deal ( a la) MSE, with blueyonder/telewest/eurobell call them what you will, ( cheating bas***ds ).
I was promised a deal for cheaper high speed broadband for a year at a substantially reduced cost and free television any package for 3 months.
    saving approx £300

The person (Rob) at their national movers centre has never returned one of my 30 or so calls. So far the deal he arranged has not been honoured. Every month since I arranged the deal I await my bill, each month I am over charged, each month I contact them and am told this is know sorted, wait for the next bill and still not sorted. Carry on going around and around.

Do you think I am within my right to cancel my 12 month contract, claiming breach of contract on their behalf? Fortunately I still have the orininal emailed offer of contract.

One point of note, each rep has a monthly budget to hold on to customers. Most people I have spoken to at telewest have said how shocked they are at what I was offered to stay with them.

No wonder rob will not call me!

I just called Telewest and spoke to a very nice chap. I said that I had seen the advertisementd for Talk Talk and Bulldog broadband and asked if thy could match their offer. After quite a long discussion about what "up to 8MB" really means and some comments about whether the new companies will be around in 3 or 6 months time, he offered to give me telephone and 2MB broadband (guaranteed 2MB) for £20 per month. I also downgraded my TV from Supreme package (£17.50 per month) to the basic package at £5 per month.

In summary I have gone from £46.49 per month to £25.00 per month, albeit with the loss of some of the TV channels that I never watch anyway. This deal will last for 12 months so I have made a saving of £257 over the year.

Big thank you to Martin and MSE. :money:

  • I have just tried getting a deal with NTL. Got rid of the TV and phone last year. Have got the 1 meg BB. They told me at customer services that £17.99 was the only price they could offer me. Is there a different number I should try as using Talk Talk as a threat didn't do the trick. I've been with them for 4 years. Had the the TV for 10 but got rid of it as it got worse over the years.

Phoned customer relations. Spoke to a guy. Said as I had been with them for so long would offer the following.
    1. 1 meg broadband for £8.50 and not the normal £17.99.
    or
    2. 10 meg broadband for £10 !!!!!!!

When I asked him how long this deal was for he said for as long as I stay with them.

RESULT - took the 10 meg of course !
