  • My chef flatmate says don't fill the sarnies to be frozen with mayo - ice crystals form and it wrecks them.

He suggested houmous, with some grated carrot to add at lunch.

This is one of my favourite sandwich fillings, but frozen??

Another good non-frozen sandwich filling suggestion: pesto, cherry and avocado. Yum!

Neither takes that long to prepare before work.

    Hi MUMOF4,

I've added your thread to the main one on freezing sandwich fillings. Not all of the fillings will be vegetarian but you will be able to read what does and does not freeze well and pick and choose what will suit your family from the thread.

This thread may help with sandwich spread ideas:

I have a recipe for Bean Pate, haven't actually tried it myself but it sounds nice.

    1 large tin kidney beans
    2 cloves garlic
    juice 1/2 lemon
    2 tbsp olive oil
    2 tsp tomato puree
    1 tsp cumin
    1 tsp chives
    salt & pepper

Mash beans, add everything else & mix well! ( or can do in food processor )

    Hi past it ;)

It will depend on the type of filling and whether or not the filling or indeed the sandwiches have been frozen previously. If it has been frozen previously it should say not suitable for freezing on the pack.

Many sandwiches freeze well, but those containing mayonaise or fillings that are high in water content (eg lettuce, tomato etc) don't.

There's an earlier thread on freezing sandwiches that may help:

I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the ideas together.

Thank you Pinky, the reason I ask, yesterday I noticed ASDA were selling sandwiches at 10.0p  I did think about buying some and freezing.
