Yeah, I'm meant to get 8Meg, and even though I'm within 2k of the exchange, I only get 2-3! Although 5Meg has been known now and again.

You should be fine with the USB1 model. When it's all settled down, then you can look at faster components, if you feel the speed isn't great. But £5 for this little device is fine.

Only quoting their website! Ethernet is the proper way to do it as USB can throttle speeds greater than about 4.5 - 5 Mbps.

oh right.. lol i didn't mean the confusion at you but at the site. if they don't support it, does that mean i can still have it but they won't help me?! i mean seeing as i already have usb, i don't see the problem with getting a usb/ethernet adaptor, because there's no way i can take apart the computer! i couldn't even tell you where a screwdriver is in the house lol.

i'm happy with how fast the internet is at the moment.. is this how fast the laptop should be once i get it sorted out?

Yes, it's alright you're getting confused from some confusing information in the terms.

When Virgin say they don't support USB, what they mean is they don't support modems that plug directly into the USB port.

They're not referring to the gadget you want to buy, as all this is doing is giving you an Ethernet port on the computer (but through the USB port instead of internally fitted!). So don't worry about it.

    Guys I need help again...
I don't know what I'm doing wrong! The right lights as far as I could see were on on the router, I'm pretty sure all the right wires were connected to the right places, but the CD said no connection found (After I got past the connecting to the internet bit)

    What now?!?!

You are not listening to the info that you have been given!

NO CD IS REQUIRED as stated in post #10 of this long thread, so don't use it.

if i go to routerlogin.net/.com on my laptop it says i have no internet connection which i obviously don't- i don't really understand how to get it, and if i do it on this computer then it just goes to the netgear page... ???

i've noticed the internet light on the router is flashing and not just staying green.. i'm guessing this is bad lol. i'll go check the netgear page and google and stuff, but does any one have any suggestions as to what's gone wrong?

    edit:

The INTERNET light is flashing green, or there is no INTERNET light
Your Virgin Broadband Wireless router is unable to “talk to” Virgin. Your broadband service may not be activated yet. Remember the service can be activated at any time (morning, afternoon or evening) on your activation day. Make sure that you've received an email from us confirming that your account has been activated. You can access your Virgin email by logging into Webmail at http://webmail.virgin.net. Once you have received the activation email from us:
Ensure the Virgin Broadband Wireless router is plugged into the broadband-enabled phone line. Ensure all devices that connect to your phone line connect through a filter. Make sure you are using the correct power adapter provided with your Virgin Broadband Wireless router. Check the current Virgin Media service announcements page or call 0800 052 4329. Try temporarily removing all other devices from your phone line including any digital satellite set-top boxes. Connect your Virgin Broadband Wireless router to the main BT socket in your home. Unplug the router, wait 15 seconds and retry.

does this apply to me? we've had broadband for years.. surely i don't need to activate anything?? :S
and what's this about the phone lines? i'm so confused, as usual lol

That's because you're doing it wrong.

Please take espresso's advice and re-read some of the advice you've been given.

On the computer open Internet Explorer and type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar, nothing else, no if's no maybe's no but's, just do it. And the read the documentation you've been given either in paper form or on the CD.

You will then be able to login in to the router and set it up using the documentation you've been given.

And BTW the lights on my router flash to indicate traffic or in the ADSL case, it has logged on and maintaining a reliable connection. Never assume lights mean anything WITHOUT READING THE MANUAL!
