i didn't realise i had to take apart my pc to put it in!0 -
I find it hard to believe that a modern PC doesn't have an Ethernet port already in it. Any chance of a photo of the back of your PC?
Yes, you can use that instead.A friend is someone who understands your past, believes in your future, and accepts you just the way you are.0 -

Well I wouldn't as it only supports USB 1. Fitting a card into a spare slot is easy. See here:doh: Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

USB 1 should be plenty fast enough, unless they're using it for video downloads, but given the OP's obvious lack of computer knowledge and confidence, I think asking them to open the PC up is a bad idea. Unless they're able to ask a friend?
I still don't understand why there's not an RJ45 port on the computer, unless it's quite old, as they all come with one now?
This might be better as it's USB 2:

Depends on the cable speed provided, USB 1 will throttle a fast connection and a chimp could fit a network card!

If there isn't there isn't, depends on the age of the machine. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
I know what you're saying espresso, but I work in support, and sometimes you come across people that are scared to even turn on the machine.
You just have to accept that the OP is obviously very wary of the computer and its peripherals. I can fit a network card blind folded, but for some it's a real worrying prospect.A friend is someone who understands your past, believes in your future, and accepts you just the way you are.0 -

here are some kinda bad pics of the back of my computer, i'm not super uncomfortable with computers, honestly, but seeing as i've never had a laptop, don't really understand wireless routers, and have never had to deal much with the back of the pc except for putting a mic/webcam/etc in, it's a little overwhelming.
unfortunately no tech friend to help and i don't understand how it's sooooo easy to put in that card thing, when i've never taken my pc apart, and i don't wanna break it/put something in the wrong place or something.. i dunno.
is usb 1.0 not ok just for the ethernet thing to install the wireless router?0 -
Hi,
Yep, it ain't got an ethernet port! Oh well.
What speed is your Broadband, if it's 8Mb or less then the USB device you've said will be fine, otherwise you'd need the USB2 model I've suggested.
Just make sure you've got enough USB ports, but given the age of the PC, I wonder whether it even has USB2 ports and they're not USB1 ports? (Don't worry USB2 ports/devices work with USB1). If you've not enough ports, you'll also need to buy a USB mini hub (approx £5-10).
But if you wanted to pop the top off (or the side in this case!), you can just remove the 2 screws on the side where that long barcoded strip is, and it slides back and off. There you can see the ports where the card slides in.
How comfortable do you feel attempting that?A friend is someone who understands your past, believes in your future, and accepts you just the way you are.0 -

http://www.virgin.net/allyours/offers/ < we've got a package with virgin for internet, phone and cable and it says "Superfast speed of up to 8 Mbps† " "† Broadband speeds
We'll make sure that you receive the highest broadband speed your phone line can handle, however the actual speed you receive can be affected by factors such as phone line quality or distance from your local exchange. This means that you could actually receive up to 4 Mbps, 5 Mbps, or 6 Mbps - basically anything up to 8 Mbps."
so if it says up to 8mbs shall i just get usb 1.0?
lol i've already got a hub
it's useful, seeing as for some reason the usb things at the front stopped working a while back!
yeh, like i said before, not too comfortable unscrewing the pc, if anything happens i haven't got much money and clearly i don't have the expertes to fix it haha
thanks a lot!
