Follow the instructions on that link I posted and it should be straightforward. You need to make sure the cable modem isn't plugged into the computer but into the netgear router.

I have a USB thing from my computer to the modem, but this doesn't fit in anywhere on the router. Did I buy the wrong one?!

    RTFM here it's idiot proof.

You can't use the USB cable that you previously used between your modem and PC with this router!

see post 10, you connect pc - router - modem with 2 ethernet cables, not usb.

you are with Virgin cable, and your cable modem has an ethernet port?

i have no ethernet cable between the computer and modem

If not, just go to PC World and buy one!

I'm not going to be able to sleep until you get this damn router set up...

No - the Ethernet cable plugs directly into your PC from the router. The phone cable will connect the phone line to the router. Then of course you will have a power cable.

Seems like the blind are leading the blind again!

Cable modem > Ethernet cable 1 > Netgear router > Ethernet cable 2 > PC
