That's because you're doing it wrong.

Please take espresso's advice and re-read some of the advice you've been given.

On the computer open Internet Explorer and type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar, nothing else, no if's no maybe's no but's, just do it. And the read the documentation you've been given either in paper form or on the CD.

You will then be able to login in to the router and set it up using the documentation you've been given.

i've re read the advice given
i've tried reading through what it says on the cd and putting in routerlogin.com/.net, but i've been doing it in firefox. not sure if that makes a difference, i'm trying IE now

    edit: 192.168.1.1 takes me to
Oops! We can't find the webpage you're looking for

    Here are some suggestions:
    • Check the address for typing errors such as ww.example.com instead of www.example.com
    • If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's internet connection.
    • If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that your browser is permitted to access the Web.
routerlogin.com does the same and .net takes me to the netgear support homepage...?

    edit again:

i was only worried about the flashing light because i tried again and it still says no connection found, and i just don't know where to go from here. as far as i know i have every cable put into the right place.

Why why why why are you putting "routerlogin.com/.net" in?

    a) It means absolutely nothing
    b) It's not even written in a recognised form!

Please stop putting that in, and type 192.168.1.1 into Firefox or IE (and no it doesn't make a difference, I just didn't want to muddy the waters); and then login to the router, it's usually admin and admin.

    i meant .com AND/OR .net
i've tried it and i just posted the message it came up with, but i'll try again for about the 5th time just to check.

start, run (or search for vista), cmd

type ipconfig in the black box

    what does it say?

That probably won't work, as it closes the window straight down.
Open a DOS or COMMAND window (under accessories off the start menu)

    Then type "ipconfig"
