yeah, but my modem/computer are connected by usb and when i tried to take that out and connect via ethernet i couldnt get online... ill try again now

anyway my point was that yeh there's an ethernet cable from the comp to the router, but there's also usb connecting modem+comp

Right, you only need the computer connected to the router via the Ethernet cable to one of the 4 LAN ports on the router.

When you plug it in, power cycle the router.

    Give it a minute.

Open the DOS prompt again and type IPCONFIG /RENEW

Wait a few seconds (say 30)

    Then type IPCONFIG /ALL

    Then tell us the results!

shall i tell you the sorta titles/headings?

    windows IP config

    ethernet adapter bluetooth network

    ethernet adapter local area connection
description:.... motorola SURFboard SB5100 usb cable modem
and then it has all the IP address bits etc...

    Sorry I don't understand?

Why would you even consider unplugging it?

You want the computer connected and a laptop on the wireless LAN? Can you supply the model of the Router, as this is not making much sense, as wireless routers don't tend to have USB ports, but 4 LAN ports?

You're not using 2 routers at the same time are you?

It should be Virgin Cable Entry Box to the Wireless Router's Internet port then to the computer from the LAN ports.

I unplugged it because I was doing nothing with it.
I don't care about the computer being wireless.
    It's a Netgear WGR614v9
The computer is connected to my modem not router by USB. Which is why I had to buy an ethernet cable and adaptor

Is the computer seeing your Ethernet port? Did it come with drivers, did they install okay?

Yes, I forgot this thread is getting so long! I think we might be on to something if the computer didn't install the ethernet adaptor ok.

So when you plugged in the Ethernet adapter, did it acknowledge the existence of this new hardware?

This might be cause of all the trouble, if it didn't work, then I think you really really need to consider espresso's original advice and get an Ethernet card to fit inside the machine. If you're that worried the TechGuys at PC World can do it for a fee, but I think you'd do a good job.
