Doesn't really matter, the point is there's no mention of the ethernet adaptor, but I am curious about the bluetooth thingy?

Do you have a bluetooth dongle in?

i have one but it's not plugged in atm

ipconfig when i'd unplugged the usb from pc
so it was like... usb adapter > ethernet > router
    modem > ehternet > router

    what's this about??

No it looks like the USB Ethernet adaptor is gubbed. Just one last thought, can you send a screen print of the hardware list from the device manager, with the USB Ethernet Adaptor plugged in please (it has been plugged in all the time hasn't it?). Which one did you go for in the end?

there's a print screen of the device manager
i bought one off ebay... here's the page:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=140247160837&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=004

the overall feedback was a decent percentage (of the seller) but i've just realised that they've had about 56 neg feedbacks in the last month... :(

The item on ebay shows a CD, didn't you get that with it?

Did you try the install drivers trick on the unknown USB device?

I think it's gubbed then, cut your losses and pop down to PC world and get an ethernet card fitted. That's the best advice if you're scared to do it yourself.

I wouldn't worry too much about a few negs, I'm about to leave one for someone who's peeing me around! Also how very wierd, it's the exact same seller I was looking at a product from earlier today - spooky! He has sold 15000 items, and Royal Mail (hello custardy) do have a reputation for putting the boot in.

Sorry to throw a little more confusion in here but that modem only has one ethernet port, that will presumably get attached to the wireless router, why does he need a usb-ethernet adapter?
Surely a usb wifi adapter is the way to go?.

Because bc3000 decided that taking a pc apart was beyond his comfortable levels, in fact I think they said that they don't even know where a screw driver was in the house!
And money was an issue, so a USB Ethernet port seemed the best way to proceed, but it looks like it wasn't! Either it's faulty or the system just cannot see it!

Thinking about, there is no reason, not to use the ethernet port on the laptop to set up the router, then use a USB Wifi adaptor on the PC afterwards and the laptop's in built wifi card? Good idea!

Do you think you could elaborate? lol. Don't worry if you can't be bothered.

I've pretty much given up with this. Iceze has been trying to help me and we can't get the adapter to work, so either I try and buy another one or take apart my PC, and seeing as I'm moving out (hopefully) in a month, I don't see much point in doing either. I'm going to try and sell the router to a friend, and possibly return to adapter?

    Thanks for your help everyone.
