Has anyone had any contact from your electric provider regarding the £100 grant for LPG and oil users.
No nothing, but following your post, I have just emailed my provider to see if they know anything about it.  I would rather have the money sooner rather than later, as my tank will need a top up very soon.

Here is a link to the current guidance, should anyone wish to have a read.

So I move in next week and can't switch as I already have a tank full of Calor left by previous owner ? or could I shop around for a deal and switch but not get a top up for a few months? or could I stay with Calor for now without a contract and them just charge tank rental and switch once the tank is almost ready for filling?
You can move in with a tank of expensive gas (assuming you have had to pay for it?), switch but not benefit from your new reduced price and loose a bunch of time from that new contract.
Or you can just pay Calor their rental, use the gas and when you get down to around 30  % or thereabouts (weather is a factor)  look to switch or negotiate a deal with Calor

These examples where the gas has been negotiated between the outgoing/incoming people are interesting.

Well, I wonder how the Unfair Contract Terms part of the Enterprise Act 2002 applies to what LPG suppliers do. Here's some guidance .... Group 12 (p57) is relevant if the previous owner was quoted a price ...and you are now being charged a different price?  https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/284426/oft311.pdf

Dont forget that either the previous peoples price was what that prev owner was paying at the time. If on a variable rate it would be different at the later time of ordering.

It sounds as if the prices mentioned where between the outgoing/incoming people not the gas firm.  as in "when i checked last it was X, but now ive ordered its Y"

Well, you probably know the law far better than me! BUT when I checked out unfair trading many years ago it was illegal to deliver something then tell the purchaser the price (that had happened to someone on the forum - which is why I checked).. If people wish to look the law up there's now the Consumer Rights Act 2015.... and no doubt some useful explanatory stuff posted for people without legal training. And people can always ask their local CAB - Citizens Advice Bureau - which either has a crib sheet to hand ...or else pass tricky questions up the line. Council trading standards dept have been hollowed out and historically forum users have found CAB more reliable (but this is anecdotal - and unresearched!)..

Yes , the original price of 69ppl was just the current owner checking their price on the internet when I asked about them filling the tank 6 weeks ago. Not sure if they were informed of the actual price before delivery . It would be unfair of me to complain and leave them out of pocket  when I instigated the filling. Although contracts should be exchanged any day now the gas is still theirs until then.
  • Do keep an eye on the guage and the weather. Trying to switch when the roads and fields are full of white fluffy stuff and the guage is at 5% can get rather "exciting"

Good advice @Sorting_Hat - unfortunately I think we're living in exciting times, whatever the weather...  :)
  • Hi Newbie here. Does sound ok any advice awesome.

Moved into house in stix with LPG bulk gas tank. Use wood for the fires from the trees lots of them around here so not had to refill the gas tank yet, just use for showers and hot tap water. Looking at needing some gas at some point, been here for eight months and tanks says 20% still in it. Been paying Calor for tank rent £18 a quarter as previous people bough off them, but no contract signed with them yet. Tried Flo and Calor prices quite high two year contract too. Tried a local company Carver Gas, they gave this quote. Is it as good as one can expect by going with a local supplier? Many thanks for any advice

Minimum 750 litre delivery that is for free within 40 miles of Carver Gas.

    55p per litre

    28 day contract

£60 rental yearly for gas tank, two weeks to set up taking over it from Calor

Sounds fair enough its unlikely to be a  28 day contract as they are 2 years (5 for commercial)
The tank switch has up to 28 days to complete but yes typically its the 2 weeks.

So you will sign a switch form, that goes to Calor who have 5 working days to give Carvers the paperwork for your tank, Carvers will look it over, maybe ask you some questions about the tank (if the paperwork raised anything) and there you get your 2 weeks etc.

The above is mandated by a 2009 bit of legislation.
  • Thanks Sorting Hat for the advice. Your spot on regarding the 28 day contract, the form came in for Agreement it as 2 years on it as you stated. MIght give this one a go
