I'm currently in contract with Calor until 1st September paying 48p/l in Fife.

At what point should I start asking for new quotes? Around now or nearer the time?

Anyone in Fife paying significantly cheaper?

According to UKLPG, my possible suppliers are:

    Calor
    Avantigas
    Flogas
    Mac Gas
    J Gas
    Gleaner Oils Ltd

You can start looking around now. The transfer should be performed within 28 days. You can also end your contract early if you are willing to pay for loss of profit to Calor until the end of the contract. If you have enough gas to last until 1st September then it may be worth discussing this with Calor on the basis that they won't be losing any profit (as you won't be ordering anymore gas from them anyway).

In regards to your pricing, I wouldn't try finding anyone else in fife cheaper than your current price. With the way that the large LPG suppliers price then this is actually rather pointless as I am sure that you will find both higher and lower prices in Fife. Don't let this distract you from the task at hand which is getting the lowest price for you.

Using the prices offered to others on this site, I would suggest that you use mid-30s as a good starting point and probably be happy at that or even a 1 year fix at around 37p.

Depending on your annual usage, the customary offer of £x amount of free gas should be averaged across the per litre price to give a more accurate comparison. Good Luck.

Thanks, Avanti Gas have offered 36.7p/l fixed for 2 years plus £66 per annum tank rental. They have also offered £150 credit which seems a good starting point

New to MSE and domestic heating LPG there appears to be little price transparency on LPG costs. Is there a free LPG price comparison tool anywhere please?

Welcome to the forum. As AdrianC says, this is probably the nearest you'll get to a price comparison tool.

HateLPG posts charts - roughly each month - on the few prices posted on suppliers' websites plus the index for the wholesale price. The wholesale price is always quoted in US dollars so he converts this into sterling at the current rate of exchange.

    Here's his latest chart:

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=68356002&postcount=2486

NONE of the majors (Calor, Flogas/MacGas and AvantiGas) post transparent prices, and only a few of the independents....which is why this forum is so useful - and users are asked to post ALL the offers they get (including fixed price, maximum rate of increase, 'free gas' and tank rental) plus their approx area (e.g. first part of postcode or nearest town)....and also their approx usage in litres per year. Size of tank and location (above ground or underground) is also useful info. Prices without VAT (currently 5% on domestic LPG).

If you do an 'advanced search' on HateLPG's username you'll find other charts he's posted, including long term trends.

Live in CW8 postcode in Cheshire. Just got quoted 44p/l from Flogas fixed for 9 months; Calor quoted me 34.5 fixed for 1 year, 3.5p cap in year two with £250 credit; Avanti didn't answer their phone for 10 minutes!; Premier quoted me 34 fixed for 1 year, cap of 4p in second year with 200 litres free. All based on approx 2000 litres of usage.
  • Gents thank you for your feedback. For interest 6th August 2015 Lima gas 28ppl. HBS 30ppl

So, at the end of two years with Calor, I've started looking about at who to go with for the next two years.

With all prices in bar one, ExtraFuel are miles ahead... So far ahead of the others, in fact, that I'm wondering how and why... Any gotchas to beware of with them?

(I'll list all the prices here once it's a done deal with whoever)
