When I didn't know about Child Benefit
Hello folks! I am trying to sort out gaps in my National Insurance. These gaps have to do with when I became a mom. I am not from the UK (I'm American) and I simply didn't know better, regarding Child Benefit. Therefore, I didn't apply for Child Benefit until my son was 3 years old & my daughter who was 1 year old. And I…

Pension forecast
My forecast is short of “full “ pension by about £25 per week. When I rang DWP to increase contributions they said I can’t add to any below 2016. I have 2 year (2013/14 and 2014/15) where I fall short by £67 per year but they won’t let me contribute towards it. I find Martins words misleading as he says you can pay as from…

NI wrong year
Last year following advice from the Future Pensions Service I purchased 7 additional years, which I was advised would entitle me to a full state pension. I waited 9 months for these to show online and after all that the SRP forecast advised I was still 1 year short. After further discussion with the FPS I decided to…

My situation, self employed for the last 20 years, full time employed before that, full NI record, on line to receive SP of £203.85 per week. All good so far. BUT..... In order to get that full pension I need to contribute 2 more years. This ought to be in hand, but it appears not. Tax year 2022/23 is showing year is not…

National insurance gap
Hi, I was looking at my National Insurance record after listening to the latest podcast. I noticed I have incomplete years from when I was at university (1996-2000). I otherwise have all other years complete. My questions are - is this the case for everyone? I didn't have a paid job when I was at uni - does it matter, as I…

57 year old Mother - What State Pension am I entitled too?
Hello All, First time poster so go easy  My Mother-in-Law is 57 years old and is not sure what she would be entitled too for a state pension or the steps to take to check. She has not had a job with tax paid towards a State Pension but cared for her two daughters from 1982 to 2006, 2006 being when her youngest…

I’m 50. Have retired. Have 26 full years worth of NI contributions. Live abroad. Is it worth...
... me topping up the 1 available year 2022/23 at £824.20 and if so when? I’m envisaging to hopefully not have to work again. No guarantees, but, that’s the aim. I’ve read through Martin’s article several times at length and I’m still non-the-wiser, it is so confusing! I’ve also read something about Class 2 contributions…

NI Voluntary Contributions - help please!
I had twins in 2006 and for various reasons quit my job to look after the children. My husband was on a good wage. I registered for Child Benefit in order to get my NI credits but opted out of receiving any payment to save my husband having to pay it back through his taxes. I understood that I would receive credits until…

tax years which will increase state pension
Hi Guys, I have just looked at my wife's NI record and state pension forecast. She needs to buy one more year to get her full state pension. She has 7 payable gaps including 2020-21 which will cost £795.60 but I notice the system is also saying 2015-16 is "year not full" at only £142.65 I seem to remember that there is a…

Voluntary backdated NI payment class 2 disallowed prior to 11/04/2015 - why?
I asked the Revenue if I could pay back to 2013 at class 2 because I had self employment and low income back to 2013, but they have only permitted me to pay class 2 back to 11/04/2015. I phoned to ask what happened on that date, as nothing changed on my side. I didn't understand the reply - something about the way they…

What to do if I retire 10 years early
I currently have a full pension entitlement of £221.20 (as of 2024) and reach retirement age in 2041. If I keep working until 2030, and then stop does my entitlement start to go down? ie, in 2041 will hmrc look at my last 35 years (2006-2041) which I'd only have 24 years (2006-2030) (because i stop working in 2030), or do…

Impossible system
The system is impossible - if you click button to pay voluntary Class 2 NIcs after you send your tax return there is then no option to pay it. The phone lines have been blocked for 3 years now and if you write to them they do not send you this 18 digit number which you need if want to make a payment. Disgraceful system.

Gaps in NI, should I pay?
I'm currently 38, have 12 years NI in full, and around 10 years in gaps. 2003 to 2007, I was a full time student so got gaps there. I worked part time and 03 to 05 are complete, 05 to 07 are not for some reason. Oct 2008 to Sept 2014 I was working in Germany. Assuming I work to 67 and they don't move the goalposts again in…
