Confusion with Tax codes
My mother (77) is in receipt of the State pension. My father died in Feb and she is now paid a portion of his work pension from the Teacher's Pensions. These are her only 2 sources of income. Teacher's Pension originally put her on tax code 647L, but has recently changed it to K52. Neither of us can understand the official…

Nursing home fees after death
An aunt of mine died a month ago in a nursing home :-(. We emptied the room the following day, but have received a bill today for over £1000 for the use of the unoccupied room for two weeks after her death. :( We are appalled - is this usual practice?

£30 to retrieve my will!
I did a will about 8 years ago, kept a copy and the solicitor kept the original. Just received a letter from the solicitor saying she took early retirement, closed the office, and now wants me to pay £30 to get my original document back. Also if I do not pay up within 7 days then I will be charged storage costs in addition…

Buy or rent?
I own a small terraced house, probably worth about £110,000. I am 62, retired because of ill health, and living on the state pension. Would love to go traveling, but need to free money to do this. I could sell, buy an even smaller cheaper flat, (looking at retirement flats). I am aware these incur service charges, which…

Australian banks and interest rates
Hi there Will someone please point out the flaw in my argument as I can't see it really. If I transfer money to Australia, under their system upto £600000 will be guaranteed. So, that is an immediate benefit over British bank accounts and removes the need to split accounts which is a pain. then, they are offering circa 6%…

A few questions about my parents situation
My father (75) was recently very ill and for a few weeks we did not know if he was going to pull through. 6 weeks after the original infection he has now been moved to rehabilitation at another hospital and will hopefully be home in a month or two. My parents have been married for over 40 years but have always kept…

Pensioners and Income Tax
My mother is 90 years of age and receives a State pension of under £100 per week. She has no other income. She does have a fair bit of savings. I've noticed that some banks/building societies pay more interest on non-ISA accounts. How much interest can she receive without having to pay tax?

Inheritance tax forms time and cost saver
My Mum dies recently leaving an estate over the IHT limit, but there will be no IHT to pay because she's entitled to a transferred allowance from her husband who predeceased her. Nevertheless we have to fill in the full IHT form, which runs to over 100 pages. And it contains several schedules, each of which needs the same…
