Friday 21 May is Silver Surfers Day, a day of events to help and encourage the over 55s to get started using the internet.

You can either take part yourself or help friends or family get online. If you'd like further to help someone get started using the internet the Help Pass IT On website has some great tips.

More than 1,500 events are being held around the country in libraries, community centres, schools, shopping centers, and UK Online centres.

Use the Silver Surfers event search or call 0800 100 900 to find an event in your area. Although the majority are, not all of the events are free so be sure to check you know if there is a cost involved before signing up.

  • We are going to have a bumper year this Silver Surfers Day with more than 1,500 Silver Surfers’ Day events to help older people get online will be held this Friday, 21 May.

All registered events are listed on a searchable database at silversurfersday.net

Information on local events is also available by phoning the Freephone number 0800 100 900.

For the UK’s biggest promotion of ‘hands on’ sessions exclusively for older people, invitations are going out from UK Online Centres, libraries, Age Concern branches, voluntary organisations, community centres, schools and many other venues where Silver Surfers’ Day events are being organised locally. Events will be held in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

What will most events have to offer? They will all be suitable for total novices! Most will be free.

They will provide older people with a gentle introduction to using a computer and a taste of what getting online has to offer. They will be pressure-free and relaxed! If a participant is only interested in one aspect, for example learning how to send emails, that’s fine.
  • It would have been helpful if more than 2 days notice was given!!
  • Would you have liked to attend a Silver Surfers Day Landewednack Lad ?

If you have never heard about Silver Surfers Day before, it happens every year and runs during Adult Learners Week we have been going since 2002. We try to promote it as widely as possible and that includes this year where we have been putting the message out where we can in blogs and forums like these.

You can watch Sir Terry Wogan on the BBC Breakfast sofa [news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8679999.stm] and listen again on the Jeremy Vine Show [bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00sbdjn] and many other BBC Regional radio shows. There has also been a great deal of coverage in the press. Sir Terry has been our ambassador this year along with Dame Vera Lynn and they join a host of other famous faces who have supported us in the past - you can watch a video here [youtube.com/watch?v=I6z09WtR4bg&feature=channel]

Take a look on our map [silversurfers.digitalunite.com/events] where you can type in a postcode and find an event running near you - if you can't make it on Friday the event holder will probably be running more free events that you can attend on other days.

And remember if you can't go you might know someone else who could benefit from a helping hand from one of the events running locally to them - do you know anyone?

The school I work at had this event last year with pupils teaching the 'silver surfers'. It was a great success and enjoyed by all. It runs this year again and will be a regular feature. Don't know what ofsted would make of it though if they turned up at same time! lol

this should be held on a saturday rather than a weekday - not all over 55s are retired!
