Is there a difference in fuels?
Long discussion at the weekend with a friend about whether or not thee is a difference between the fuels sold by the suprmarkets and those at (e.g.) a BP station. I would have thought not that much but my friend was adamant that his car runs quieter, smoother and gets better mpg using the BP diesel than the stuff from…

Ever tried mixing Acetone or Ethanol into fuel?
I'm just curious. A work colleague used to buy Acetone and then {I Think} he used it to raise the Octane number of std pump fuel. That's what he said he was looking into anyway. It's just got me thinking if there's any cheap HC source that could be mixed with petrol to lower the cost a bit.

deposit for car purchase
I'm thinking about buying a used car which is going to need an inspection taken out on it. Once we have agreed a price what is the best way to ensure that the vendor does not sell the car to someone else before I get a professional inspection on it ? Is it normal to put a deposit down and if the car is OK then paying the…

Rover - dead electrics
Hi 2-3 weeks back we had a flat battery on our rover 416 (p reg). It was jumped a couple of times and the we changed the battery and all seemed fine. All was fine until yesterday, when my boyfriend broke down in the car on the motorway. Whilst he was driving the head lights started flickering and he managed to pull over…

Can I use Tip-ex on the V5?
Slightly unusual situation here! I've just purchased a car from a friend - he bought it himself only a few days ago, but circumstances mean he now has to move away. I have the V5, and the Green slip that is part of the V5 - but they both have his details written in under the 'new owner' bit, ready for sending to the DVLA.…

Cheaper train travel (Merged)
On BBC Look North there was a story tonight saying that GNER, Virgin and Midland Main Line were altering their pricing stratergies and bring them into line with the no-frills airlines. That is there may be some cheap ticklets out there going into London. Midland Main Line are offering a single to London from Sheffield for…

London Transport - Oyster Pre-Pay can be cheaper than season ticket
Hi - this is the first time I've posted but I've had great tips from reading other's posts. I don't know is this has been posted before, but I couldn't find any matches when I searched for 'Oyster'. For those who don't live in or around London, well, it's of no use to you! Oyster is the electronic ticketing system being…

Airport Parking Charges
I had to pick up passengers from Stansted airport, and stayed for about an hour in their short stay car park. Going through the barrier afterwards, I found myself being charged £5. Later I was told that it is cheaper to stay in the mid-stay car park. Incidentally, while I was waiting for the plane, I took a walk round the…

Are UK Diesel fuel prices too high?
Having driven in Europe a few times recently I have been puzzled that in most EU countries, the local pump price for diesel fuel is often 20% cheaper than unleaded petrol. In the UK, the pump price for diesel is typically 5% higher than unleaded. Does anyone know if this is down to our tax/duty regime or is it that the…

Contaminated Petrol
Hi, I have recently had a bad experience with my car and would like views or help in how to go about getting action. My car developed a fault and went into a main dealer, after 5 days the result was a diagnosis of 'A PETROL/DIESEL MIX IN THE FUEL SYSTEM'. Now if this was my fault I would keep quiet and just pay the money…
