On BBC Look North there was a story tonight saying that GNER, Virgin and Midland Main Line were altering their pricing stratergies and bring them into line with the no-frills airlines. That is there may be some cheap ticklets out there going into London.
Midland Main Line are offering a single to London from Sheffield for £6.

The new fare structure was first publicised by GNER several weeks ago.
The actual advance return fares appear to be vitually unchanged. What has changed is greater flexibility for the customer. In the past, if the lowest fare available for your outward journey was £30.00 you paid the same for your return totalling £60.00. With the fares being sold as singles for travel from 25/9, if there is a minimum fare of £10 available for the return you could be saving £20.00.
Other changes include the ability to split classes of travel, eg. First class out then Standard class back. Tickets can also be booked up until 1800 before the day of travel.

Not sure I understand what the difference is with Virgin - they've operated a policy whereby you get value single fares for some years now. The only thing that has changed is that rather than being rigidly 3, 7 and 14 day advance purchases, they now have a set allotment of A, B and C fares at differing prices, and these are on sale until they sell out. Bizarrely, it does mean that quite often a 1st class value is the cheapest fare available now...I really must stop loafing and get back to work...0

The refund admin charge on these tickets is £10, looks like they have been picking up tips from Ryanair.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

That's the rate they usually have for promotions I think.0

thetrainline.com also have a credit card charge of £1.50 to buy tickets online, which Virgin don't charge.0

Warrington to Chelmsford (via Euston and Liverpool St).
You didn't chose your dates but put Warringto to Chelsmford on National Rail and a Saver Rtn i £63. However, click on the singles Tab and you can buy tickets for £16.50 each way (Virgin Value).sorry no links in signatures by site rules - Forum Team 20 -
I travel to Warrington from London but it’s still cheaper by National Express + voucher code for me. But for the comfort paying a little extra may be worth it. And I guess it depends on what day you travel on too.0
