Oil vs Electricity to heat domestic water - where's the tipping point?
Apologies if this has been asked before. Having just coughed up over £500 for 1000 litres of domestic heating oil, has anyone done the calculation as to where it become cheaper to heat domestic hot water via an immersion heater rather than an oil-fired boiler? Without going into complex thermal efficiency calculations, age…

install log burner
I want to install a log burner into an existing fireplace, normally this would be straight forward, however, i live in a conservation area, so require consent from the local planning dept, the problem i have is that the existing chimney access point on the roof is on the "front elevation " and faces the highway. ( the old…

Fixed Rate Tarriff?
I am with Eon, paying £78 per month for electric only. Eon have suggested that I go onto a variable energy plan after my fixed contract ends in November. This will be approx. £96 per month. I have searched comparison websites and I can get a fixed deal for 18 months with GEUK for £116 per month. Although that is higher…

Boilerjuice "under delivery" charge of £20
We have been a Boilerjuice customer for 13 years and had a mainly positive experience. Today however, we had an oil delivery and were charged £20 as an "under delivery" charge - we had ordered 800 litres but it turned out only needed 590. Delivery was by RDS Fuels Ltd. Has anyone else experienced this kind of charge with…

Oil delivery delays
If you are running low on oil.... Unsurprisingly the current energy & transport sector problems are affecting oil deliveries. I had a courtesy call from Conquest Oil this morning (I use them direct occasionally) just to warn me that they were looking at 3 week minimum delivery schedules due to shortage of drivers. I then…

Heating grants for social housing?
It's a very long shot but I wonder if anyone knows if there's any way of getting some sort of grant or subsidy for installing affordable heating in social housing properties. I live in a tiny 1 bed bungalow which gets very cold due to strong prevailing winds. It in a pretty rural area so the only heating electric storage…

Oil Vs LPG - New Connection (almost)
So, dilemma on our hands. We are currently in the process of moving our existing LPG tank to a new compliant location. With recent news on gas prices, we are now considering whether moving to oil is the more sensible option. Yes, aware the initial set up cost may be more expensive, and we will need to consider our internal…

How to get rid of an inherited 19kg British Gas propane cylinder!
Hi All, My first post, but have been avidly reading for ages. So, really grateful for any advice, I've a 19kg British Gas propane cylinder that was in my garage when I bought my house (4 yrs ago) - I want to get rid of it (in case relevant- I'd say either empty or nearly so from memory of lugging Calor gas cylinders). I…

Luxury Wood Company reduce size of 'giant' crates without telling customers.
We’ve bought firewood from the Luxury Wood Company for a couple of
years now, but when we received our latest crate we noticed that it
was smaller than the ones we’ve received previously (which we had
cut-up and made into woodstores). We checked the
website, which still had the old measurements on it 1.7 x 1.2 x 0.8m,
but…

EDF Exit Fee Rise
Signed up for new EDF Tariff last week, Fix Total Service Sep24v2. The early exit fee advertised was £35 per fuel and that was also stated on Martins website. Just had confirmation for sign up and the T+Cs now say £100 per fuel. How underhand is that?

LPG tank or bottles - clueless here :)
Wonder if some folks on here can help. Property currently supplied by 2 x LPG 47 bottles and looking for a better solution. Currently I have to remember to go and check them in the outhouse regularly then phone for new bottles and they seem very expensive. The heating seems to eat gas so for the last few years we have used…

Aircon air handler positioning
Hi I’m having multi split aircon installed for main area heating/cooling next week. Have discussed it in depth with the company and they’ll fit an outdoor Toshiba condenser with three indoor air handlers. The most common position and probably the easiest for the indoor units is high on the wall and that’s what’s been…

Moving to ex-council house that needs new heating system
Hello, New guy here, looking for advice on heating systems after the reports in the news recently that gas prices are about to go through the roof. We're about to move into an ex-council house in a village, that currently has old storage heaters (the previous owner switched to them after coal many years ago!). I have lined…

Advice wanted for replacement underfloor heating
My underfloor heating (in the concrete floor) in my first floor flat has failed. The flat is electric only. The heating didn't do the job and I often had to use a oil filled plug-in radiator to top up the heating. I've been doing research for the last week or so while trying to also get quotes for electric heating…

Intergas boilers
We are having a new gas boiler installed and the fitter recommends Intergas. He says that he has fitted many of these boilers, and recommends highly. We hadn't heard this brand name before, and before deciding would appreciate any comments regarding these boilers or any others which you would recommend. Thank you

Planning permission and air source heat pumps
We are beginning to think about getting an ASHP to replace the solid fuel heating (woodburner) currently in this house. However, as it's a barn conversion, permitted development rights have been removed so from my research it looks as though we'll have to apply for full planning permission. Conservation area too though…

looking at a flat to buy - really liked the flat, first floor (of three, purpose built block about 40 years old) - I think they originally boilers + tank in an internal cupboard, now it has this rather dominating combi boiler and its piping. Any ideas what we could do ? the thoughts we have had are: - put the tank back and…
