Price quoted by the travel agents was over 400 pounds, which was enough to make the…

Uswitched
Having lurked for a while I ran down the catgories on the left and followed what I thought were the best options for me. I now have a cashback credit card and an ISA with decent interest but the prize goes to the utilities switch. Read the articles and followed the advice, changed from Scottish Gas and Scottish Power to…

My first anniversary
It's a tad over a year now that a friend of mine forwarded me Martin's monthly email. I haven't precisely totted up how much I have since saved with the help of MSE, but it is in the hundreds on items such as insurances, phone bills and purchases of appliances etc. It's amazing how much bang up-to-date information is…

Just saved £175 for mortgage exit fees
Took out a endowment mortgage in 1989,I then changed it to a repayment in 2003 having been informed that I had a case for miss-selling. I was informed by my solicitor in Nov having sold my property and purchasing another than we will incur a exit fee of £175. This is the first we had heard of this, and we were in fact told…

Spreadsheet Software
A thank you to Martin. I was in need of some spreadsheet software and so, on his advice, downloaded OpenOffice thinking this would be quite a basic package, but would have been satisfied with that. From what I have seen of it so far, it's excellent and suits my needs. It's saved me quite a bit of money. Not the biggest…

Inertia versus transaction costs
One of the mantras of this and other money-saving sites is the savings generated by challenging inertia - reviewing and changing utility, credit card, bank etc providers. Probably true enough on paper However, as some of the threads on the forum illustrate there are also hidden costs by being too being a `rate tart' or…

Saved a whopping £400 on car insurance!!
I am a 30 yr old police officer with no points or convictions and for the last two years I have been paying £59 a month to Zurich to insure a 2000 2.3 V5 Golf. Admittedly it didn't help that I paid monthly. I entered my details into confused.com and was amazed to find a quote of £301 with Admiral for fully comp. Thanks to…
