Rhubarb in late August - ok to eat ??
Apologies if this has been asked before, my rhubarb has gone mad and is enormous. It’s at the edge of a flower bed in the garden and covers and shades everything else if I take my eye off it. We’ve had a massive harvest earlier in the year and I know I’m meant to leave it now to get its energy back for winter but I’ve had…

Potted Toms Advice?
I grew a lot of veg from seed this year just as a experiment having never done this before, i made a lot of rookie mistakes but I'm learning as i go, I have several tomato plants in large pots which now have green toms on them and look very good to be honest. I have suffered a lot of bug damage to other types of vegetables…

using up old compost
Now a friend of mine who does quite well with his pots on the patio claims all the soil should be replaced every year. Something I've never done. And things are ok (mostly). But I've decided to minimalise the pots and get more things into the ground. As mentioned on another thread the soil is currently the consistency of…

Plants that have survived drought with little watering?
It's been dry and very hot here since May and I have full sun all day. I thought I'd got drought resistant plants but obviously the ones expected are still struggling, I'm exhausted watering with little effect and I'm depressed seeing my hard work dying - so was hoping for a list of any plants that people have found coped…

Thornless Roses
Hi, I am looking for some advice from anyone who knows roses. I am looking to grow one or two roses up against two normal size fence panels. I really like roses, but have been put off growing them due to them having thorns. I have been told that you can now get thornless, (or very few thorns). I don't need one that grows…

Keeping your garden green during a heatwave whilst saving water and cash
With much of the country experiencing a prolonged spell of dry, warm weather, we were wondering what your MoneySaving (and water-saving) tips for looking after your garden might be. This NASA image shows that the effect of the drought is visible from space: https://twitter.com/liamdutton/status/1557428329669615617 One…

Hornets
I thought I would share this photo I took earlier this week, of a hornet feeding on Echinops in a Bedfordshire garden. Hornets can sting painfully but are not particularly aggressive towards humans. They were being pretty snappy with each other but not one took any notice of me as I took photos. The one in the picture is a…

Another 'What's this Weed?' thread
It's about 18 inches tall, serrated leaves and the flowers are a small purple ball. The stem is square and hairy. No scent I'm going to have to pull it out but I'd like to know what it is before I do

Black Beetles! 😞
Hi everyone, I wondered if someone could help me with black beetles that fly into my house at night, when it gets dark. They're really freaking me out now. Other years, they have come around May time, and lasted for about a month, but this year they started in early June, and haven't gone away yet. Plus, we're getting…

can't grow radishes
I've tried growing salad radishes for a number of years and barely get any crop. Tried in raised beds, they bolted and went to seed. Tried in the greenhouse, same result. This year I tried pots. A few radish but mostly gone to seed again. What am I doing wrong? In my last garden I grew them without any issues.

Lowering the tone of the forum, but is it ok to wee...
in your watering can? :blush:Working in garage, nature starts to prod, can't be bottomed to go in to use the loo, so glanced at the watering can sitting there. Hmm...For a start, isn't wee-wee full of nitrogen? Ammonia? Summat like that? Ie - fertilizer? And then there's the unescapable issue that to flush away ~200-300ml?…

Picea Breweriana Cuttings?
Anyone know how to take cutting of a brewiana, we had to cut one down in the back garden after a lightning strike destroyed most of it but wanted to get a cutting and grow one on the front where we have more space! I heard late summer is the best time to get cuttings but no pictures to show much else in the way of…

Alstroemerias help please
Hi, I wonder if anyone could offer some advice on an alstroemeria? I have a small potted one outside which seems to have almost finished flowering for the year. I’ve realised that most of the old flowers have turned to seed heads. I’ve seen online that I should pull those stems out (or have I left it too late?) but if I do…

Treating a new fence
I recently had a extensive new fence fitted. It is already pressure treated. But they had to fit a different section in one part as it was on a corner and smaller. This has a couple of batons fitted which are not treated. What is the best way to treat them? Looking at various wood preservative treatments they say they need…
