Beetroot problem
Not sure what is going on with the beet root. We went away just before the heat wave and on return found them to be like this. It's been a few weeks and looks like it is getting worse. I feel it's got nothing to do with the heat wave. Grown in raised garden bed Soil and compost mixed Watered well

Hornets
I thought I would share this photo I took earlier this week, of a hornet feeding on Echinops in a Bedfordshire garden. Hornets can sting painfully but are not particularly aggressive towards humans. They were being pretty snappy with each other but not one took any notice of me as I took photos. The one in the picture is a…

Another 'What's this Weed?' thread
It's about 18 inches tall, serrated leaves and the flowers are a small purple ball. The stem is square and hairy. No scent I'm going to have to pull it out but I'd like to know what it is before I do

Black Beetles! 😞
Hi everyone, I wondered if someone could help me with black beetles that fly into my house at night, when it gets dark. They're really freaking me out now. Other years, they have come around May time, and lasted for about a month, but this year they started in early June, and haven't gone away yet. Plus, we're getting…

Do Marigolds help protect Veg?
I heard that planting Marigolds around veg can ward off pests and insects, is this another myth or any truth in it?

can't grow radishes
I've tried growing salad radishes for a number of years and barely get any crop. Tried in raised beds, they bolted and went to seed. Tried in the greenhouse, same result. This year I tried pots. A few radish but mostly gone to seed again. What am I doing wrong? In my last garden I grew them without any issues.

Lowering the tone of the forum, but is it ok to wee...
in your watering can? :blush:Working in garage, nature starts to prod, can't be bottomed to go in to use the loo, so glanced at the watering can sitting there. Hmm...For a start, isn't wee-wee full of nitrogen? Ammonia? Summat like that? Ie - fertilizer? And then there's the unescapable issue that to flush away ~200-300ml?…

Picea Breweriana Cuttings?
Anyone know how to take cutting of a brewiana, we had to cut one down in the back garden after a lightning strike destroyed most of it but wanted to get a cutting and grow one on the front where we have more space! I heard late summer is the best time to get cuttings but no pictures to show much else in the way of…

Alstroemerias help please
Hi, I wonder if anyone could offer some advice on an alstroemeria? I have a small potted one outside which seems to have almost finished flowering for the year. I’ve realised that most of the old flowers have turned to seed heads. I’ve seen online that I should pull those stems out (or have I left it too late?) but if I do…

Treating a new fence
I recently had a extensive new fence fitted. It is already pressure treated. But they had to fit a different section in one part as it was on a corner and smaller. This has a couple of batons fitted which are not treated. What is the best way to treat them? Looking at various wood preservative treatments they say they need…

Osteospermum - what am I doing wrong?
I love the look of Osteospermum and their very daisy like flowers. But I have little success with them. I plant them, I water them, they sit there greenly and lose all their flowers. They last til the autumn and then die. I've got a bucket of chicken manure pellets. Would they like a feeding of those? If so how much? Part…

garden waste in the regular bin
an idle thought for you - I wonder if you could let me know what you think.... we don't have a garden waste bin. we're not that far from the dump and if we have a quantity of prunings etc we have the time and flexibility to take it there. But if it's just a trug or 2 of grass cuttings or rose deadheading etc it just goes…

Uchiki Kuri Squash
Hi, I have planted some Uchiki Kuri Squash this year as I was hoping to overwinter some more veg that I will not have to process by pickling or freezing to store. I am growing them in the north of Scotland on a fairly exposed site and the squash are about the size of a tennis ball,so far. There are quite a lot of squash on…

Keeping birds out the house
We’ve just opened up the kitchen rear wall to fit bifolding doors (opening is only 2.7m wide) this week, and in the last 4 days we’ve already had 3 sparrows fly in and around the kitchen (currently a building site). We do feed the garden birds, and I get through 25kg of feed every 2 months so the garden is always busy. is…

Aminopyralids or similar...
I've been blaming the dreadful performance of my runner beans & squash plants on an inadvertent wood chip mulch (was meant to be on the paths, not the beds, but promised help with lifting paving slabs didn't happen) but have just realised that that bed - and my poor sad currant bushes - had been heavily fed or mulched with…
