Credit Card for 70 year old
Not sure where to ask this (Credit Cards or here). My 70 year old neighbour would like a credit card, but is finding it really difficult to find one as she's retired and doesn't have a job. She's always had a great credit record but it seems that nobody wants to know her. What can she do?

Executor - Internet nightmare
I truly think this is something that our legislators may have to address. Here's the rather ineffectual advice given by the best book I have on the subject of wills & probate from two lawyers: "Many people now manage their accounts online. This may cause a problem if, as is to be expected, there is no written record of the…

Tax codes for 2011/12 Tax year
I don't know if this will help anybody, but I've just spent considerable time checking out things and phoning the Tax Office. I am aged 64 but will be 65 during the 2011/2012 tax year and therefore entitled to the higher personal allowance of £9940 per annum. I've just received my PAYE coding notice and they say: "£7475.00…

DIY Lasting Power Of Attorney
What does the Lawpack LPA kit contain? The only description that I can find says that it is a set of forms and instructions on how to complete them. Is this any more than I have already obtained free from the OPG? Please can anyone recommend any other reading material before I complete the forms?

Pension/Benefit/Income help, caring for Grandmother
Hi I’ve just been to CAB who couldn’t help, hence why I’m asking on here. My Grandmother has finally agreed to move in with me and let me look after her. She owns her home outright. She has a widow’s pension that’s just under £130 a month. I can’t tell you exactly what she is getting but I’m pretty sure she gets pension…

Implications of giving money away to family
An elderly relative wants to give away some money to family. She is below the IH threshold. She is concerned that in a few years she may need residential care and would like to know the implications of doing this regarding paying fees. How many years back of finance do they look at for instance ? Thankyou

State pension - qualifying years
My friend wants to know whether she is getting the correct amount of State Pension. She has only worked full-time for a few years. I think there is a State Pension calculator somewhere which will enable her to work out what percentage of the State Pension she is due for (ie according to the number of years she worked for).…

can council force sale of Mum's home?
My 82 year old mother was admitted to hospital with dementia. The consultant has said she is not capable of managing her affairs and we do not have power of attorney. He has also said that she foes not have the mental capacity to grant us power of attorney. They have now said that she will need to go into a home that cares…

Mobility Scooter Batteries
My MIL's mobility scooter batteries (supplied with the scooter when new) have virtually died after just over 2 years - pretty much expected lifetime. I would have gone back to the company we purchased it from for replacements, but they have sadly gone bust. Has anyone any advice about replacements, please - particularly…

Care for the elderly-Newspapers today.
Daily Mail Front page Hospitals use trespass laws to prevent elderly bed blocking. Aparently some hospitals are now using the trespass laws to remove elderly patients by giving them 48hours to vacate beds. This seems like one government funded organisation declaring war on another and using the elderly and infirm as a…

Claim HB while waiting for flat to sell?
I have to move from the flat where I now live, because I'm getting to the point where the stairs (2 flights) are too much and I can't manage the maintenance. I probably can't sell this place for enough to enable me to buy again, so I'll have to rent. I want to move to another area. But what is the best way to go about…

Travel Insurance for over 75's?
My Mum (76) is going abroad (Europe only) a couple of times this year and I believe an annual policy v 2 x individual trips will be cheaper? She is in good health now and the only medication she takes are the cholesterol/blood pressure/aspirin tablets so common in many her age. She had a heart attack about 6 years ago…

Executor - Valuing possessions
Any advice on how to proceed with valuing possessions? The estate will pay a small amount of IHT so each extra £ = a 40p tax bill but at the same time I obviously need to do the right thing to comply with the Revenue requirements and not create problems for everyone at a difficult time. The 2 bedroom flat will not be sold…

Executor - Overpayment of private pension
What is the best way to proceed when a monthly pension annuity payment has gone into the deceased's account after his/her death?
-
Executor - Future bills on the deceased's property
On an earlier thread I suggested paying these out of the estate account but several people advised against this. What is the best way to pay for insurance and utility bills after someone dies?
-
Executor - Tax return for the deceased
Any advice on this one? I guess the big picture is that there will be a repayment of tax to the estate unless the deceased dies right at the end of the tax year? And so that must mean that I can't distribute the estate until this reclaim has happened. Do I need the grant of probate before proceeding with this?

Executor - Treatment of savings a/cs
What happens to the savings' accounts of the deceased between death and grant of probate? Are they frozen with no interest added after death? Do they carry on earning interest after death? Can I even choose when to cash them in (after obtaining probate, of course)? Most of the money in the estate I am dealing with is in…
