On an earlier thread I suggested paying these out of the estate account but several people advised against this.
What is the best way to pay for insurance and utility bills after someone dies?

You would be better keeping all you questions in a single thread.
Not sure what the problem is with paying these from the executors account.
In my case I took them over and will ballance up later when we distribute to the 2 benifitiaries.
Council tax should be susspended til probate then you get 6 months.
Insurnace need notifiying imediately because the cover will have to change.0 -

I created the separate threads because of my own experience of searching for information on the forums before asking any questions. Everything was mixed up and confused and I wasted a lot of time. My aim is to help myself but also to help others who search in future.getmore4less wrote: »Not sure what the problem is with paying these from the executors account.

gm4l Thanks for all your help so far. You've been brilliant.

Some utilities will, I believe, suspend action on unpaid bills until you've got money in the Executor's account to pay them. Worth asking.Signature removed for peace of mind0

The bank will only let me use the Estate account after grant of probate.
So in the meantime I've set up a separate executor's account with my own money to keep most of the immediate bills under one roof for ease of accounting.
Utilities have been pretty good. Yorkshire Water have a light usage allowance up to which they won't charge and the gas and electric have said they will give the estate time to pay.
I've encountered a couple of online challenges e.g. BT bills are online and he as £50 in unpaid Quidco cashbacks which can take time to come through.0 -

From the estate account. Thats what its for. Ensure property and anything of value is suitably insured and secured. Anything else can wait until probate has been granted.0 -

What problems?
You show you put £1k loan into the account or paid a necessary bill direct(eg house insurance) and that comes off the estate before distribution.0 -
If you use your own money for the estates expenses, only cover unavoidable costs, insurance, funeral etc. Keep good records and repay yourself in full as soon as funds are avaliable.0

I paid various utility bills for my father's house from my money, provided the receipts to the solicitor and was refunded with no problem.
They were simple items on my list of expenses.Member #14 of SKI-ers club
