What is the best way to proceed when a monthly pension annuity payment has gone into the deceased's account after his/her death?

No, in fact you'll need the statement from the pension provider to obtain probate. Just write with a copy of the death certificate.

I had assumed that the the annuity would be calculated daily up until death but it's not.

If a monthly annuity is paid the day before death, it is valid in full.

If a monthly annuity is paid the day after death, the estate is liable for the full monthly repayment.

    Simples!

Although I am beginning to see how simplicity is a virtue at such a time.
