Bokashi
I’ve decided that my green waste bin needs to go! It’s often disgusting and attracting flies. It’s simply not used enough to make it worth using if that makes sense? So I did some research and have invested in a Bokashi kit bought cheap via my council. It allows all food scraps to be used for plant nutrition, meaning…

Does anyone else where undershirts?
I recently stumbled across a post on a fashion website, where it was asked why many men (particularly in the US) wear undershirts. I hadn't quite appreciated it but when you see men on american TV shows, they do often appear to have a white t-shirt under their shirt. I have done a bit more research and they are,…

Hold my hand: pregnant and moving into a 1950s time machine
Hello all, Excuse the self indulgent post but I need motivation to prepare for winter in our new house and would love some words of wisdom. We are waiting to exchange on a house that hasn't been updated since 1954. Think original 1950s kitchen with Formica surfaces, bakelite switches, strange wall mounted heaters in the…

Glass jars
I am hoping to make some pickled onions this year and friends and family have been giving me their used jars. I have a couple that have had curry sauce or pasta sauce in them, so the lid is stained and the jar still has a smell of the contents. Any suggestions on how best to get rid of this or am I just best not to use…

Cleaning a glass tray
I have a Panasonic combi microwave. There is a glass tray which slides into the oven when using the combi with the microwave function. i.e. when roasting potatoes, when the oven, micro and grill settings. I have had it 2 years and it has been well used. The glass dish is now rather dirty with baked on fat splashes. Any…

How to clean off years of dried baked stuff from oven dish?
Bought an oven today. The bottom tray/dish has years of dried on gunk. Scraped some with a knife but I don't want to do too much as I don't want to scratch it. Tried putting it in the dishwasher on a super hot wash but that didn't work. I don't think vinegar and bicarb of soda will work. Was thinking the oven pride liquid…

How to enjoy life on a budget
My boyfriend and I are going to be saving super hard for the next 6 to 9 months to save enough deposit for a nice house (we were going to buy a new build house with the help to buy scheme but decided against it and to save hard for a 10% deposit on a pre-owned house instead). Anyway... As most of our spare money is going…

Home made healthy cereal bars
Still on with the trying to eat more healthily challenge. I do usually take cereal bars to work (bought ones) and have two per day, one for my morning break and one for my afternoon break. I have the Fusli bars which state they are low in sugar but I think they do still have some. I've decided to make my own as a healthier…

I have a sheepskin rug that needs to be washed. Do I need specialist washing soap (like Woolskin) or would it be better to wash it in plain water?

Recycling old (unwearable) clothes/rags
This isn’t moneysaving, but does anyone know if there is anywhere that will take a bag of old clothes (not good enough for charity shop) to be recycled? (I am on Essex/Suffolk birder in case that makes a difference.) Our local recycling points only take wearable clothing - these are no longer fit for wearing, fabric isn’t…

Weekly Flylady Thread 5th August 2019
What is FLYLADY? Well, it's our version of the US flylady idea - but we work on the principle that housework is not fun, it's boring, can be time-consuming, is often thankless but, unfortunately, necessary. It's here on Old Style to provide the support we all need and to make the whole task easier and quicker. We also…
