I recently stumbled across a post on a fashion website, where it was asked why many men (particularly in the US) wear undershirts.
I hadn't quite appreciated it but when you see men on american TV shows, they do often appear to have a white t-shirt under their shirt.
I have done a bit more research and they are, apparently, called undershirts.
They are really popular and have the benefit of (apparently) improving your appearance, preventing stains on shirts (especially in the armpit area) and, most importantly, keep you cool.
It was the keeping cool bit that made me a bit skeptical but if you buy proper undershirts, the material is said to keep you cooler than if you wore just shirt next to your skin.
Has anyone had any experience with undershirts?
As a man in my late 30s, I find it slightly odd that I was completely unaware of this and will certainly consider buying some if they really are of some benefit.

I am a lady of a *certain age* and don't have a thyroid so heat regulation is an issue for me - I wear a cotton vest each day and it definitely keeps me cool.
My clothes last longer and I feel fresher wearing my vest!0 -
I used to when I was a teenager and would sweat quite a bit.
I am not too sure if the undershirt cooled me down, or just absorbed the sweat so my shirt didn't. Either way, it solved the problem of pitstains.0 -
Just a thought from the aesthetic pov.
As a woman, I used to find it offputting if a man wore anything underneath his shirt or teeshirt. It was one of the factors involved in deciding whether I found a man fanciable or no (along with whether he was overweight, not clean enough, dressed in obviously cheap clothes, etc).0 -
Thank you, both, for that.
Working Mum, you pretty much echo exactly what was being said on this forum - people actually feel fresher and cooler from putting on an additional layer.
Seems very counter-intuitive but it really does seem to be the case, then.
Dan958 - I do suffer from major staining (especially with white shirts), so if I can avoid that too, all the more a bonus.
I think I am going to take the plunge and get some now - thanks very much for your input.0 -
Sorry MoneySeeker1 - we posted at the same time.
Totally agree - I need to seek out v-cut ones to make sure that they are not visible.0 -
I have to say I love to see a man in a white vest or tee shirt under a shirt :-)0

Never without my white vest under my short and tie! It keeps my shirt looking true during the day, instead of see through that some shirts are. Plus, though I do have a beach ready body, stops the hairy belly button from showing through!
As for sweat, it is a must in the boiler house inn my mill!0 -

Only the Americans, In civilised nations men (and women) wear vests. I'll bet your parents seldom went to school without one on.0 -

I really hate seeing man nipples poking out of a shirt hahaThe opposite of what you know...is also true0 -
My hubby started wearing an extra T shirt under his shirts , or even under another T shirt. He finds it much more comfortable, as said it absorbs sweat so he looks cleaner also stops his dark body hair showing through thinner shirts , in this really hot weather he has been taking an extra T shirt to work to change if he feels too soggy.
Also much warmer in winter too.Decluttering, 20 mins / day Jan 2024 2/20
