My DH recently began wearing a t-shirt under a shirt for work, but that's only since starting his landscaping/property maintenance business, where his clothing is casual.

When he was office-based and wore a suit/tie etc he never did this, although having washed his shirts, I can see the potential benefits :p

Although seemingly counter intuitive, a T shirt or similar under another shirt can help keep you cool. It acts to draw moisture from the body and evaporate, thereby cooling the body.

I thought Undershirt was just US English for vest. Vest being something else in US English. Vests can be sleeveless or have sleeves. Linguistic differences.....pants..... suspenders......jumper

Yes what Americans call vests, we call waistcoats.

Just a point on pants and trousers. When I was a kid, the word "underpants" was used to describe what men wore under their trousers and the word "pants" was used as a short or slang word for trousers. Now it appears that "pants" refer to underpants. In fact the word "underpants" has almost disappeared.

I actually remember having to wear a liberty bodice when I was young.

Young children still wear a vest.

I love the american look. Classier than a see through shirt and a male (or female) belly button

p00, you beat me to it. I, too, wore a liberty bodice (with a long row of rubber buttons down the front) when I was a child, plus a vest in winter.

Why rubber buttons? To prevent them breaking on the rollers when passed through the wash wringer.

Late to the party but do you remember when Tony Blair had huge sweat marks on a blue shirt?

That would have been avoided if he'd worn a cotton vest/undershirt.

  • A lot of vests (UK word) from about the 50s on, didn't have sleeves though, so they didn't solve the 'underarm' problem.
T shirts actually developed from American 'undershirts' (see Marlon Brando in a Streetcar Named Desire)
When I was a teenager, older people would tease you if you wore a Tshirt, saying 'is that your underwear?' and we would check in with each other 'does this look too much like a vest?'

I keep old T shirts to wear under shirts & blouses, but as you can tell, I'm old!
