Glass jars

I am hoping to make some pickled onions this year and friends and family have been giving me their used jars.
I have a couple that have had curry sauce or pasta sauce in them, so the lid is stained and the jar still has a smell of the contents.
Any suggestions on how best to get rid of this or am I just best not to use these jars?

Have you got a dishwasher? I would put the jars and lids through that on a hot temperature and see how they smell then.

As long as the smell has pretty much gone, I would have thought you'd be OK for pickled onions or other pickles as they are quite strong themselves. Wouldn't use them for jams.

Just put stretch cling film over the jar opening before you put the lid on

With the heat from jar & contents it will pull a vacuum & form an air & pong tight seal as it cools

    I do this with chutney.

jars, a very hot wash should clear the pong if no dishwasher.

You can buy lids from places like Lakeland for various sizes of jars if the lids are really badly stained. As others have said a hot wash should get rid of the smell.

Wash them out with the sterilising fluid that home brewers use? I've had some absolutely disgusting demi-jons that come out looking like new after a couple of hours soaking.
