Vanilla Sugar
I've bought some vanilla pods and want to make some vanilla sugar - the internet is awash with recipes and opinions and now I'm confused. My nan just used to put the pods in jam jars filled with sugar and rotate and replenish them so that there was always one that was ready to use. Some methods include scraping the beans…

Bread and butter pudding recipe
Hi. I'm going to have a surplus of leftover bread today, I was thinking of making a bread and butter pudding that could be eaten either hot or cold. Does anyone have a foolproof recipe I can have please? I've never made this before, don't like it, but I know it's quite a popular pudding. There will be a mixture of breads,…

Asda online thread
I shop exclusively online at Asda. Reason, you can get delivery for £2 (albeit late at night) and the £40 min order is about right for me as I shop twice a month and aim to spend £90 per month (I actually have a 'global' monthly budget of £120 but I'm trying to squeeze that down to £90 so I can save £30), hence that's £45…

Working Rich Pastry Dough
I'm trying to work with a very rich pastry. It is one of Richard Bertinet's recipes: 350 g flour 125 g butter 125 g sugar 2 eggs plus 1 yolk and Pinch of salt When it comes to working it well it really is impossible to roll! For the moment I'm using it in tartlet tins just by adding one bit to another and filing the case…

Does anyone have the latest Prima or Good Housekeeping?
Hi, Does anyone have the latest issue of Prima or Good Housekeeping? I want to buy a subscription as a gift but I don't have a copy of either of them to see the latest subscription offer. I've had a look online and the only offer I found has expired. I could just buy it from one of the subscription companies without a code…

Content/Appliance insurance question
Hey everyone, So, I had a wee look online at a comparison site who I shall not name, and found that my contents insurance would approx be about £5-£8 per month. I phoned the insurance company I have at the moment, difference being that they only insure certain items in my home (fridge, cooker, freezer), which is great…

How do I stop oil dripping from my extractor fan?
Now, I realise that the title of the thread makes me sound like a dirty so-and-so who never cleans, but trust me that on this occasion it just isn't true. I am very lucky to be in a new kitchen with a new extractor fan. I wipe over it each time I use the cooker. Once a week I take the mesh filter off (very easy, just…

Strange tasting food.
Slightly odd one that only seems to happen when I'm cooking meals with mince. It's getting a very unpleasant taste that makes it inedible - sort of a soap metallic taste. It's something in the sauce, not the mince itself. I've even bought a new frying pan in case that was the problem. Tonight I've narrowed it down to…

unscented fabric conditioner
I dont use fabric conditioner as my son won't wear the clothes due to the smell (I dont like it much either) He also never wears clothes when he can get away with it due to the feeling of them, I think it would help him if they were softer (ie I used fabric conditioner) Therefore am looking for a fabric conditioner that…

Packed Lunches - Ideas & Favourites
Fellow Tight-Wads ( that's meant as a compliment...) I could do with some new packed lunch ideas! I deeply resent having to fork out the thick end of a "bluey" ie £5, to buy a mediocre sarnie and drink at lunch. Also, the food is often too salty, unhealthy, not that fresh - and the waste in packaging is bad. So I take in a…

Quick question - boiled bacon
Hi, I bought a joint of bacon from the butchers and cooked it in the slow cooker with a couple of ham stock cubes and water. I skimmed the fat and am left with about a pint of sock - jelly like! Can I use this as a stock for soups or something?
