Hi. I'm going to have a surplus of leftover bread today, I was thinking of making a bread and butter pudding that could be eaten either hot or cold. Does anyone have a foolproof recipe I can have please? I've never made this before, don't like it, but I know it's quite a popular pudding.
There will be a mixture of breads, white, malted etc, will this be ok?
Thanks in advance

Mrs lurchwalker has posted a lovely recipe for a savoury bread and butter pudding on the what are you making for dinner thread.
I made this at school many years ago and it was very tasty.0 -
I don't have a proper recipe but the method I use is always good.
Take your leftover bread (or doughnuts, cakes, croissants etc) and tear into pieces; it doesn't really matter what size. Either butter each piece or just dot some small bits of butter throughout when you put them into an oven dish. Don't fill to the top as it will swell/rise a bit - about 2/3 full is about right. You can put dried fruit or chocolate chips between the layers if you fancy it.
The liquid you need depends how much bread you used, but I normally start with a litre of milk (including any leftover cream) and whisk in 3 eggs and a few spoons of sugar. Add any flavours you like e.g. cinnamon, cocoa, vanilla. Pour over the bread and leave it to soak in. If it doesn't look enough to fully saturate the bread, add some more milk (and eggs if adding a lot more milk).
When it's all soggy, sprinkle some sugar over the top and put in the oven at 180 degrees C until golden brown. It usually takes 30-40 minutes IIRC.
Serve with cold milk. Yum!
As you can see, it's not a recipe but there's not much you can do wrong.0 -
Can't believe anyone doesn't like bread and butter pudding. Lots of online recipes, all basically similar. My favourite one is to add sultanas and cherries, and sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon. Serve hot or cold with custard or ice cream. Also a cold slice makes a good basis for a packed lunch.0

I love B&B pudding, my dad used to make it when we were children, he worked for a dairy that delivered bread and got to bring the leftover loaves home. The crunchy bit poking put the top were the absolute best bits! Having said that it has to be hot for me.
He also made a wicked bread pudding, now that is delicious cold.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
Thank you all for the ideas, I like the sound of the chocolate chips, this might persuade me to try it.
I'm going to give it a try tomorrow, will let you know if I've been brave enough to taste it. Thank you once again.0 -
My favourite twist on bread and butter pudding is to use maltloaf layered with sliced banana and a good slug of rum in the egg and milk mixture sweetened with brown sugar.
My son's favourite was when I made marmalade sanwiches with the bread before adding the wet ingredients. This got called Paddington pudding in our house!

If you are looking for something that works well cold bread pudding is great this recipe is pretty good though I like to sprinkle some caster sugar on top once it's cooked https://www.netmums.com/recipes/bread-pudding0

Thanks, I love bread pudding my nanna used to make it, hate bread and butter pudding.Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. There is no more hope for a fool than for someone who says, "i am really clever!"0 -
My son loves bread and butter pudding but doesn't like dried fruit. I substitute sliced apple instead. I also use a variety of bread in it. Last time I googled 'bread and butter pudding easy' I either put that or 'basic' after the recipe. I find, if I don't, recipes come up with loads of ingredients that aren't needed and can be expensive. That's something I find extravagant for a recipe that is originally a leftovers dish.0

All the above ideas are great, I shall be attempting a pudding during the week with some left over bread, if it's a success I'll make a bigger one with next weekends leftover bread. I'm particularly liking the idea of a bread pudding that is as nice cold so will be trying this one as well.
Thank you all0
