Being old-stylers when others aren't
Just wondering what other other o/s diehards do when dealing with friends, visitors, family etc who aren't. I try to be money saving but am frequently gobsmacked by the wasteful ways of others. Recent examples: - a friend who spilt a couple of drops of milk on my worktop and tore off 6 sheets of kitchen roll to wipe it up,…

Vegetarian trekking lunches
Here's a tricky one for you all. I must admit, I'm stumped. I'm off exploring the trails in a very remote area soon and I don't expect to see a shop for the full week. I'm sorted for breakfasts and dinners, but stuck on packed lunches. I won't have any access to cooking facilities or a fridge or coolbox. What I will have…

Pan burnt dry - can I save it ?
I had one of those "senior" moments today and left a pan of water on the cooker (whilst I answered the phone), then forgot all about it until the smoke alarm went off! :o It's completely black at the bottom. I've soaked it all day but no change. Is it beyond saving? Does anyone have any ideas I can try (apart from chucking…

Is it possible to live without tins / jars / packet mixes?
Hi everyone, I'm trying to eat as much healthy and fresh food as possible and this got me thinking about the tinned food, shop bought sauces, packet mixes and stock cubes I have in the cupboard. Would it be possible to do without these? Things I'm thinking of in particular are what I would use instead. For example... Baked…

Cleaning tea light holders
I have loads of round glass candle holders, leftover from burning the contents. I'd like to give them to the charity shop / donate on Freecycle, but they are still a bit waxy. I've cleared the wicks and most of the wax out but would like to get them into a sparkly state, using and old toothbrush and I don't know quite…

CHEAP Vegetarian BATCH meal ideas please!
Hi Everyone, As the title says, I'm looking for CHEAP meal ideas that I can preapare in BATCHES. They must be vegetarian/meat-free please. Ideally the dishes will be easy to make and freeze well. Unfortunately I'm not a great cook and I'm not very good at coming up with good ideas on my own. I'm a busy mum, I don't have…

TV programme being advertised at moment
Does anyone know what the programme is that is being advertised at the moment, showing a lady presenter talking to a woman who gets roughly an hours sleep. I think the programme shows ways they will try and help. I want to record it but haven't the faintest idea what it's named..

Burn mark on trousers from iron
Tried to iron a cheapish pair of M&S trousers with hot steam iron, and as soon as it touched, I was left with a shiny burn mark. Entirely my own stupidity, but they are almost new, and would like to save them if poss. Would anyone know a way of getting rid of this mark? I can vaguely remember seeing some cures for this, a…

Help! G/F vegan sponge recipe needed!
Hello, I am about to bake the dessert cakes for my son's wedding, and have been told that there will be 2 vegan & 2 coeliac guests...they will all be on the same table (for the caterers benefit). I found a g/f vegan sponge recipe, and tried it yesterday, but the result could be used as a door stop :( Does anyone have a…

Popcorn
In an attempt to cut down our expenditure on crisps and evening snacks (note cut down, not eradicate), I've been making popcorn on the hob. It's great. Nothing beats freshly popped, still warm popcorn. But how do you get the toppings to stick? If I use liquidy ones, it deflates the popcorn and makes it soggy (obviously).…

vegetarian BBQ
We are not ourselves vegetarian, although we cut down on meat, and we have a number of vege friends. So, I want to do some BBQ dishes that are not halloumi or vege kebabs. I have a fantastic Glamorgan sausage recipe that is much admired, but it will not hold together well enough for a barbecue (unless I just put them in a…
