vegetarian BBQ

We are not ourselves vegetarian, although we cut down on meat, and we have a number of vege friends.

So, I want to do some BBQ dishes that are not halloumi or vege kebabs.

I have a fantastic Glamorgan sausage recipe that is much admired, but it will not hold together well enough for a barbecue (unless I just put them in a foil dish)

I know some people here will have some great ideas - many thanks in advance

There are quorn products if you like those. Burgers, sausages, peppered "steaks".

Bean burgers might be an idea - but again they are prone to falling apart.

I think foils is probably a good idea...

I saw chickpea burgers done on Eat Well For Less the other week - I didn't barbeque mine but they did on the show. I followed this recipe but there's lots online with different variations. I'm a real carnivore but I loved these.

Big mushrooms filled with garlic butter wrapped in foil or par boiled sweet potato wedges brushed with a marinade have always been popular with our veggie friends.

I'd just like to second the chickpea and sweetcorn burgers as seen on Eat Well For Less. My friend made them and they were great! The sweet potato wedges found like a great idea too. I love sweet potatoes and found some massive ones in lidl.

How about some interesting salads and sides too, like bulgar wheat, couscous or quinoa made with veggie stock and with veggies chopped up in it? Simple but tasty:)

Thanks all - I should have said that a couple of friends are not keen on quorn (neither am I, but have found that marinading the sausages with paprika & garlic helps!)
I love the beanburger / falafel idea, but again, I do think it would need to be done in foil.
Big mushrooms sounds great, and stuffed aubergines, so i think these will be next on the menu.
I also like the flavoured corn-on-the-cob idea, to serve to all.

Edited to add: yes, tabouleh, made with either bulgur wheat or cous-cous is already a standard of mine - but this thread has made me realise that it would go especially well with falafel / bean or chick pea burgers....
  • My DD is a vegetarian and we make all sorts Mushroom Burgers is a favourite
    • 4 large portobello mushrooms caps, wiped clean
    • 3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
    • 1 tablespoon olive oil
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper
    • 4 large Baps
    • baby rocket
    • 1 large tomato, cut into 8 slices
    • 1 red onion, thinly sliced
    • strips of grilled red pepper
    • cheese slices
    • Burger sauce/relish

Preheat the grill to medium-high heat. Place the mushrooms in a baking dish or pie plate. Whisk together the vinegar, oil, salt and pepper until blended. Brush the mushrooms with the vinegar mixture; let stand for up to 15 minutes. Place the mushrooms on the grill rack and grill until tender, 4 to 6 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate.
Layer half the slices with the mushrooms, cheese, rocket, tomatoes, onions and red pepper strips into the baps. Serve immediately. People can add their own burger sauce/relish
Butterbean, feta and spring onion burgers
400g cooked or tinned butterbeans - drained
    1 tsp ground cumin
    10ml lemon juice
¼ clove garlic, peeled and finely minced
1 small handful picked flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped
1 tbsp plain flour (gluten-free flour also works fine)
    1 tsp salt
    1 egg
1 spring onion, trimmed and finely sliced
    50g breadcrumbs
100g feta (or other crumbly goat's or sheep's cheese)
Put the butterbeans, cumin, lemon juice, garlic, parsley, flour, salt and egg in a food processor and blitz to a coarse paste: you don't want the mix fully pureed, otherwise the burgers will be too wet and will fall apart on the grill. Fold in the onion, breadcrumbs and cheese, then chill for at least an hour.
Squash the mix firmly into patties (use a ring mould, if you have one), but keep them small, so they're easy to handle on the grill. Lay the burgers on a parchment-lined tray and pop into the freezer for half an hour, to firm up a bit.
Cook over a medium grill, but don't try to turn them until they are completely set on the cooked side, otherwise they will disintegrate. Carefully loosen from the grill bars – use a palette knife – then flip over and cook the other side until done.

Some fab ideas here, but make sure the veggie stuff is grilled well away from the meat.I know it seems obvious, but as a life long veggie, I can't tell you the number of times my food has been tainted by meat juices , on a BBQ :(

  • I have two BBQ's Candy Girl, One small one for the vegetarian food and a larger one for the meat, this prevents any taint from meat

Vegetable skewers are good and halloumi cheese too, the only cheese that holds up on a barbecue.
I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back
