Washing machine advice please
My previous washing machine lasted me 15 years before giving up the ghost. We got a new one last year and the guy that installed it couldn't believe how long the other had worked for. He told me not to expect the same with this one. Apparently things are not made to the same standards of even 16 years ago! So I am left…

Porous Plate that Smells
I have a lovely set of plates which aren't glazed and therefore it seems slightly porous. At some point I must of put some fish on it and it now smells. I've soaked it twice in water I've put a disinfecting tablet in but it still has a wiff when I open the cupboard. I obviously don't want to use bleach but I'm a bit stuck…

Charcoal biscuits?
I love charcoal biscuits for cheese. A lot. But the brands I know of are expensive and they are a very rare treat. Does anyone here make them and have a recipe they have tried and tested?

What to do with a scratchy vintage mohair stole
I have a lovely vintage mohair stole in beautiful pastel shades. It's gorgeous but can't be worn as it is VERY scratchy! Since it was given to me by an elderly relative I've kept it for years but never been able to use it. I just can't think what to do with it... any ideas folks? I don't mind making it into something if it…

Rescuing dress
Not sure I'm on the right board. Last week I wore my new dress in work. Unbeknown to me the underside of the desk was rough and my new dress got snagged a lot on the desk. I thought the dress had a woven pattern but it has a pattern that is printed on the fabric. In order to rescue it I need to paint dark blue die on to…

What is your favourite party buffet food?
Hi Folks! My 30th Birthday is coming up in April, and I am menu-planning the buffet for our house party now, so that I can try to pick the things up cheap and pop them in the freezer. I prefer to make everything from scratch personally, but you know how it is, sometimes your guests couldn't care less/don't notice the…

Slow cooker question
Hi, I have put a stew into my slow cooker - veg and meat. I put it on about 3 hours after I normally do as I had a lie in this morning :) The veggies are still like bullets and we need to eat it in a couple of hours - is it OK to transfer from the slow cooker into a normal casserole dish with lid and put it in the oven?…

Plain Flour/SR Flour in recipe
I have a recipe that calls for 125 g plain flour and 2 and a quarter baking powder. Any idea how much baking powder I would use if I only have SR in the house? I am trying to clear cupboards etc so don't want to have to go out and shop if I don't need to.

It's a Somotec XBM 1008 and I couldn't for the life of me find an instruction manual on t'internet so I've just cracked on and tried to work it out myself.…

Broken perfume bottle
Hi I wonder if anyone has any suggestions. I dropped a bottle of perfume on the floor, it is all still intact but the spray mechanism no longer works. I've tried pulling the top off but it seems stuck firm. It's nearly a whole bottle so obviously I don't want to waste it! Any ideas?

What is a cheap way to get heat (spice heat)?
Ok, I sometimes get a craving for hot (piquant) foods. I'm not satisfied unless I'm gasping for water and my mouth is on fire! BUT. The hot sauces are quite expensive. So far I've only found one hot sauce which is adequately hot (a Jamaican one from the world foods aisle in Tesco). 70p a bottle and I go through a bottle in…

Fundamental principles of saving money
All of the tips and tricks are useful, but I think being thrifty is a way of life, a part of your personality. It is pointless learning about laws if you know nothing about legal structure and process. I came from a thrifty family - it's in my blood. The basic principle I want to show you, is to understand what you are…

Soda crystals in washing

I bought some soda crystals to add to my washing loads but unsure about quantities and if anyone has found it irritating to the skin on the…

Can I revive my basil plant?
A couple of weeks ago I decided to make my own pesto for the first time. I bought a large basil plant in a pot from Sainsburys (for £2 ), used some of the leaves and left it on my kitchen windowsill. The remaining leaves looked like they were wilting the following day so I gave it some water, but noted that the…
