Breadmaker with no instruction manual!

OK, so maybe I should've asked on here before starting to use it :rotfl:

My mom gave us a breadmaker a while back, one of the many gadgets she buys then gives up on! It's a Somotec XBM 1008 and I couldn't for the life of me find an instruction manual on t'internet so I've just cracked on and tried to work it out myself. Hmmmm

Hopefully some expert breadmaker-users could let me know if I've made a boo boo or whether it should be ok?

So, I used a breadmix from Mr S, put 250g of it in the pan (it seems a fairly small one so didn't want to use the whole lot), then added 12.5g butter (mix packet said 25g), and 165ml water (mix packet said 330ml), set it to basic and pressed start. I'm hoping that in a few hours I'll have a lovely loaf of bread, but no idea as when I've made bread before I've always done it the old fashioned way. I took all the bits out to have a look at, and put the pan and blade back in, obviously, but there was a dough hook as well that I couldn't work out where it went, or even if it should be in there in the first place - not sure if my mom just put it in for us? There wasn't anywhere in the machine that it would fit, so I'm hoping it's not a disaster that I didn't use it!

OK, it worked so I can't have done anything terribly wrong! :D Of course, we haven't tasted it yet so might be rank, but looks/smells good so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

    Looks edible enough!

Our Panasonic basic loaf recipe is 1 teaspoon yeast, 400g strong white flour, 1 teaspoon each salt and sugar, 25g butter or oil, and 280ml water. And if we use the sandwich loaf setting it takes an hour longer but the bread is softer.

Experiment with these quantities and see how it goes.

Tastes good, so good that in fact I'm going to have to make another one today as we've eaten it all already! :D
  • Hi, I won one of these bread makers in a raffle and I've just started to use it. I've set the machine away and it just keeps bleeping at me . I've moved the settings, turned it off for a while and it still won't start or be quiet.😖 Any help would be great thanks. ☺️

I always use a full pack of mix (if I'm using prepacked) and it's fine. Unless your bread maker is tiny that should be okay. Try it once and see!

  • Hi FrustratedNana did you ever solve your problem?

We've just been given this bread maker and it's just beeping constantly!
  • Hi I'm trying Emilykf notes as its my 1st go with this machine.
I have no idea what will happen or how it will turn out.
    Fingers crossed x
  • I have this type of breadmaker. On the basic setting (on the left hand control) the breadmaker beeps on a number of occasions during the process. it does this:

    1. The device beeps when powered on at the socket.

    2. The device beeps when the start button is pressed to indicate that the program has started.

    3. After a bit of mixing and proving, the bread maker will beep serveral times (eight, actually I think) to let you know that it is time to add any optional ingredients, for example sunflower seeds or whatever you like. It will then mix these into the dough with a second round of kneading.

    4. The breadmaker beeps a lot of times to tell you that the main baking program is finished and that it is starting the "keep warm" feature. This is to keep the bread warm for up to an hour after the baking program is finished. I find that it is useful to leave the bread in for the full "keep warm" stage as this tends to result in a nicer crust than taking it out immediately on completion of the main baking program.

    5. The breadmaker beeps a lot of times when the "keep warm" phase has run its course, to let you know that you should take the bread out and leave it to cool.

    I hope that this helps.
  • Just a quick addendum, I always half (or with a few, maybe take 3/4) the usual bread recipe, as the pan is small and it is not good when the mixture overflows onto the oven heating element. The bread that results is usually large enough for a couple of days, which ensures that it is used while still nice and fresh.
