OS item on National Treasures Live - BBC1 7.30pm 17th August
The item will only have about 15 mins coverage but at least it should be interesting! Greg Wallace will be shown at the imperial War Museum where he'll be exploring rationing during World War Two. He learns about the recipes people used during the war and he makes a rabbit and squirrel stew that he dishes up to the public!…

Being a homemaker even after the kids have left home
OSers - I'd be really interested to hear how many of you don't work outside the home even after your childcaring days are over. My Mum was a homemaker all her life and never felt like she needed to defend her choice, but I think it's becoming much rarer. I'm trying to make decisions about my working life following yet…

Needing inspiration - veg-based meals
Hi al, Having spent over £150 on food for our family of 4 for a week, we desperately need to cut our food bills. I am hoping that more veg-based meals will help but other than veg curry, baked pots and pasta with various veg I'm stumped! Does anyone have any favourite veg recipes they can share with me? Apologies if I've…

Food ideas for a party at home for 20 that won't break the bank
It's my birthday in a couple of weeks and I'm having a party at home for around 20 people. I want to serve something substantial to eat as there'll be a lot of drinking. I don't really want to do a buffet as it's a lot of work and I don't have much time. I will if I have to though. I'm struggling to think of good ideas…

Hog jowls
Am currently in Spain and at the supermarket picked up what looked like slices of belly pork, but turns out to be "hog jowls". Apparently, they are cured and taste a little bit like bacon and are used in traditional deep south cooking in the U.S. (typically at new year with collard greens and blackeye peas). Does anyone…

Everyone is so helpful here that I am going from strength to strength with cooking from scratch and saving a fortune. Curry with no ready made sauce is my next challenge. Could anyone tell me which they consider to be the best recipe regards

Can I rescue my green paddling pool?
I thought I would ask here before I ditched the water. My kids 12ft paddling pool has gone green and has a few mosquito larva floating around in it. I have some algacide but it just stops algae forming, I do not think it kill and clean what is in there. Is there anything OS I can add without it hurting the children? Thank…

Sick hen. Help!
If anybody's up. My little skyline is in trouble. I'm flummoxed and desperate to keep her alive right now. She's been a bit listless and keeping to herself the last 6 days but still laying an egg a day which I tend to use as an indication of where they're at health and contentment wise but I've been worried. All 4 girls…

Ginger Beer Plant
Hi, I'm hoping that some lovely person reading this forum might have some genuine GBP that they might be willing to split? I have very fond memories of ginger beer made from a GBP when I was a child. A friend's mother had the culture but I've long since lost contact. I'd love to be able get my hands on some and be able to…

Ironing advice needed please.
We have recently started a new business and as a result have a lot of bedding to wash and iron. DD has been doing this but is finding all the ironing of the bedding is extremely time consuming. As I propose to pay her by the hour I too should be helping to cut down on the ironing time or to make it easier for her. I have…

Will my burgers be ok to eat?
I bought some fresh mince, froze it straight away. Then i deforosted it in the fridge a week later and spent some time making my own burgers, we ate most of them for tea that night but i had a couple of spare uncooked ones and i thought i would freeze them and keep for another time. I've only just thought about the fact…

Jewellery storage/display
And now for something completely frivolous. I have a large amount of beads etc and tangle free storage is always a problem. I pin my ear rings on a cork notice board (colour co-ordinated cos I'm sad). Beads hang on a couple of coat hooks. Just wondered if anyone had any other ideas.
