Ginger Beer Plant

Hi,
I'm hoping that some lovely person reading this forum might have some genuine GBP that they might be willing to split?
I have very fond memories of ginger beer made from a GBP when I was a child. A friend's mother had the culture but I've long since lost contact.
I'd love to be able get my hands on some and be able to share the delights with my own family.

You can buy it online but it is quite pricey (£9 for 50g here). However, you can produce a very acceptable ginger beer from ginger, yeast and sugar, which produces a culture which you can then divide and use over and over again - so really the only difference is that you are using commercial yeast in the original batch instead of wild yeast, no?
Anyway, the method we used to use was almost exactly like this one, if that's any help to you.0 -
Thanks, but I'm rather wanting a 'proper' GBP rather than a yeast substitute and ofc being MSE and OS I'm hoping someone has one ready to split, rather than having to buy one.If you feel my comments are helpful then I'd love it if you 'Thanked' me!0

Hiya,
Sorry, but while I'm sure there are kind hearted members who would love to be able to help you out; swapping, giving items and the exchange of personal details is against the forum rules. I'll copy the relevant section below for you.Forum_Team wrote:

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: For legal reasons I have to discourage swapping, buying and selling on the forum (please see this rule). While it can be a very useful way of saving money it relies on a certain amount of trust between members and as such can cause problems (and has in the past). Sorry to trawl up a dead thread, but has anyone made a ginger beer plant? I am hoping to make one tonight! The last time I tried it didn't seem to work, but I started it last October. I'm hoping that the summer (ha!) weather will help it along a bit.0

We had one that exploded in the airing cupboard in spectacular style when I was a child, never forget it
Still love GB thoughYou never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow0 -
Wow, must have made a horrendous mess!0

A proper GBP is a SCOBY - Symbiotic Colony of Bacteria and Yeast - and can't be 'made' easily. The GBP scoby looks a bit like mushed up stewed apple. You could buy a bit from http://www.gingerbeerplant.org/ or try asking on Freegle/Freecycle to see if someone has some going spare.
Or you could do one of those yeast, sugar, ground ginger jobs - some people seem to like it but if you've had the real stuff doesn't cut the mustard.Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

Thanks for that daska. I have read online though that you can make a basic one using just ginger, water and sugar. It seems to work for a lot of people so I'm hopeful that will be successful.0
