dead duck bread
Does anyone have a recipe to make light wholemeal bread? Mine always turns out like the loaf that kills the duck in 'About a boy'. I bought some wholemeal bread flour on half price offer in Tesco and am keen to experiment.

Hi, What do you old stylers use for streak clear windows. We have just had large picture windows fitted and when the sun shines they are covered with streaks. They look even worse since the window cleaner has done the outside:confused: Its the job I hate most of all. please make it easy for me.

Draught proofing a cat flap (and checking for other draughts)
Hi everyone Any suggestions for draught proofing a cat flap? It's a thin transparent plastic flap. Do you think it would help to stick some thick insulating material onto the inside of it? And is there a cheap and easy OS way of finding out where the heat is disappearing to? I'd like this winter's gas bills to be lower…

Should be quick: frozen fish
Hi all, I've got some pollack fillets in the freezer to use up before we move as I really cannot be bothered to take the contents of the freezer so we're eating all of it! I also have potatoes to use up so I was going to do fish and chips. The question that I have is: can I batter and deep-fry frozen fish, or does it need…

Storing Dalmatian Ham and pancetta
Hi, I have just come back from Croatia with a vacuum packed block of Dalmatian ham (like Parma ham) and a block of pancetta also vacuum packed. They both have a date till end of December. Obviously I don't want to eat all this in one go. How would I store it once opened? Would I just wrap it in grease proof paper and keep…

I know I shouldn't have but...
.... sometimes the bargain shelf in the co-op mesmerises me. Basically I've got four frozen Aberdeen Angus beefburgers, bought in the summer and frozen, I doubt I will use them now. So what I thought was, if I let them defrost and then perhaps make them into something like meatballs do you think that would work. I have…

Wholemeal SR flour recipes
Hi everybody, I have some wholemeal SR flour in my pantry I really want to use up, so would be interested in any baking recipes people may have. ATM I dont have any plain flour and no funds to buy any for at least a week, so Id prefer recipes using only wholemeal SR. I have a fairly well stocked pantry (apart from the…

Could I make my own 'Colourcatchers' ?
I used to sort my washes by colour and only do a wash for, say, reds and then a separate one for blues, whites etc. It took several days to amass enough for a wash and sometimes I just did a half-empty wash (feeling very guilty.) Now I do them all together (except whites) but I use a colourcatcher, and so far have had no…

another bread question (sorry!)
Morning everyone :D I made a basic loaf last night which came out lovely :j. I had some while it was still warm and crusty with some home made jam and it was delicious. This morning when I sliced it for sandwiches I notice that the crust is no longer crusty.... Is this normal or have I stored it incorrectly? (wrapped in…

Family Circle christening gown pattern
Morning all This is a bit of a long shot, I think. Many years ago, Family Circle magazine offered a pattern for a Christening gown. It was quite a simple style, short puff sleeves, pin-tucking on the bodice. Anyhow, when my babies were tiny (they're now 14 and 13:eek:) I used this pattern to make them those lovely…

Vegboxes?
Hello I'm currently reading confessions of an ecoshopper by Kate Lock and have been looking into local organic vegboxes. How many of you have tried these succesfully or not and do you think its worth the extra bit of money. I love the idea of fresh local fruit and veggies to my door but at the same time I need to remind…
