a plea for a recipe from a 1970's Reader's Digest Cookery Year cookbook!
I saw another post about how to make the best scrambled eggs and it reminded me of a recipe for Southern Scramble. I'm pretty certain that's what it was called. In 1981 we had a crack-a-meal competition in school and we had to make a meal with eggs for 4 for 50p or under (inflation, huh?) I costed this recipe out and won…

How to get rust stains out of car boot?
Any ideas please? Something (no idea what) has been lying in a car boot and has left 2 sizeable rust marks on the car boot carpet. Will they shift do you think, or are they there for good now? I suspect they've already been there quite some time. Tried a household carpet cleaner but it didn't really help much.

Bulk buying rice
My 20Kg sack of (Habib Pakistani basmati) rice ran out a month or so ago (it was one my dad got from the Chinese supermarket 4-5 years ago - and at the time was much cheaper than supermarket prices). I've been buying plain basmati rice from Tesco, for around £1.70 kilo to put me on until I get my next sack (either 10 or…

Air freshner refills
If you have one of those airfreshners that use the mini refills and go off when something in the room moves the refills are about £3 each. The tiny airfreshners in Lidls which you fit inside a small plastic box and stick to the wall come with 3 refills for £1.74, and guess what they fit the branded automatic ones too, All…

Kirstie Allsopps homemade home - OS opinions?
Hi All, I watched the new TV show Kirstie Allsopps homemade home last night on c4 and couldn't help but wonder what the OS'ers might make of it! Seemed to have some interesting ideas about getting things cheaply (like 'skipping') and then doing them up yourself to make them nice again, and haggling, which seems good sense.…

Gallon of wine for £2.03
I've just started my very first wine batch today. Bought a small fermenting kit on ebay and if all goes well I shall be taking advantage of all the natural resources the woodland around this little village has to offer. My first batch is a gallon of....wait for it....Tea Wine. If you think booze from Aldi and Lidl are…

What to do when your budget runs out?
My food budget has run really short, what can I do to a) ensure that I don't end up like this next month (we've had no excess spending on the budget) and b) get through the rest of the month after this week? It's not the budgeting that's hard, it's the sticking within it. No wonder we've ended up 1000's in debt, I dread…

Calling all cake makers - urgent help needed
Hello there I am about to make my sons birthday cakes - an inchworm and a worm cake. I am using a silicon round mould with a hole in the middle (think they might call it a bundt ring). It is this size 100mm / 4"deep x 245mm / 10" wide I thought I might make a chocolate one and a plain maderia one but I have no idea on how…

How do you keep coriander fresh?
I love coriander and buy big bunches of it from the Asian supermarket. Even though I use loads, sometimes I have to store it for a few days - and, invariably, it tends to go slimey. Anybody know how to keep it fresh? The stuff I buy sometimes still has the roots on, sometimes not. I have tried standing it in a jar of water…
