New car help please
I have saved up and am about to buy my first car. It's not actually my first car, more like 5th, but for the first time I will be buying it myself, with my own money. (Family have always got me them before) I have 4k and could possibly go slightly higher, but would prefer not to (plus a Nissan Primera 1.6 something 10…

Expensive pothole
2 days ago i was travelling down a local country road when I hit a pothole. Well, I say pothole, it was more like a crater at the side of the road. It was the type of road where the edges of the tarmac are raggedy and it's literally tarmac, bit of dirt/stones then shrubbery about another foot away. Travelling within the…

Easier to set of in 2nd rather than 1st
I've only been driving with my own car for about 3 weeks. I've realised my car stalls when setting off in 1st unless there are sufficient revs. But, on my way to work this morning I discovered it's easier and smoother to set off in 2nd and is less prone to stalling if there isn't much gas. It's not quite what I expected…

Deposit paid, no car - cash purchase
I went to view a second hand car 1st April (yes, I realise Aprils fool's day before someone comments :) ) Full price is £750, and I put down a deposit of £250. The dealer had to then tax the car, which he advised he would do on the Friday so I could have the car for the weekend. I pointed out that it was Bank holiday, so…

Getting stickers off a bike
Ok, apologies if this is in the wrong section!! Mods, feel free to shift me somewhere more appropriate if necessary! I've been given a really cracking bike that would be perfect for our daughter; I'm planning on doing it up and giving it to her for her 13th birthday from the cats! However, it's got loads of stickers on it…

Petrol or diesel?
Hello, I am looking for a "new" (to me at least) car and like the Hyundai i20 or new shape Fiesta as I don't need a big car for me and DD but do need 5 doors and want a minimum of 1.4 engine (which is what I currently have) I drove an i20 yesterday which was a 1.4 diesel and the salesman was pushing it as being more…

Car insurance
Anyone got any top tips, I have looked at Martins Tips but got totally confused by all the various cashback, clubcard, etc etc recommendations. The only think I did actually manage to work out is that the 150 quid I am paying each year to Tescos for a breakdown cover is a total rip off. For the same price I could go with…

Bought used car, needs repair - repair or refund?
Hi - advice needed, any received tonight particularly welcome! Bought a used car today. £2.5k, automatic Ford Focus 2002, 66,000 mileage, one year's MOT. Test drive seemed okay. On the way home it starts doing the most terrible shudder while it's in reverse. Google suggests this happens quite often and can be transmission…

Deposit Paid for car, Dealer Reneging!
Hi, I thought that I would post to get an opinion on this scenario we are a little bit annoyed. On Saturday we spotted an advert in Autotrader for a car at a local(ish) independent dealer at a very good price. We drove over and spent quite a lot of time checking the car out and taking it for a test drive etc all well and…

What rights have I got if I buy a second hand car from various sources ?
I may well soon be in the market for a circa £5k car. That budget might just about stretch to a 5/6 year old Golf or a slightly younger Polo or newer Vauxhalls or Fords. But what rights do I have if it turns out to be a lemon ? I'm guessing that if I buy privately, I am stuffed and it is all my problem. Buy from a garage…

MOT Advisories - Please advise
I have recently bought a second hand car from a garage and it was sold with a full 12 month MOT. The garage dropped the car off on Friday and I have just got round to looking through all the paperwork and wondered if anyone could offer me some advice. The car is a 1999 'T' reg Astra 1.6 Automatic Estate and with the MOT…

Police no MOT or Tax or insurance
What happens if stopped by police and you have no tax, ins or MOT? On the TV shows they take the car now, it cost a couple of hundred to get it back. My question is if its an old banger and you dont care about getting it back, are there any other charges? Do you get points on your licence or have to go to court or pay any…

BM 7 Series opinions
Seeing as I may be doing a hell of a lot more commuting than my current 8k a year, I have been thinking of a new set of wheels, and have recently seen the 740i that my mate bought for 12k, and I am very tempted. Apart from the obvious big fuel bills and servicing costs, are there any models to avoid or other things to look…

dent in bumper
I have managed to get a dent in one of my rear car bumpers (entirely my fault, no other cars involved). I have arranged for it to be fixed, but this won't be untill Thursday. Someone has told me that if I drive my car around with the dent, I could get pulled over by the police and get points on my licence - is this true?
