can I tow a caravan

hi I passed my test july 1994,,question is can I tow a caravan and drive a 71/2 van,, my sis and man have split,,she wants me to take her car with her caravan away for cpl months at ayr,,once she get all sorted she wants me to drive van to help her move,,can I do this legally

I can't remeber the dates these things all changed but your driving licence will tell you what you can drive.

On the back of the photo licence Cat.BE is for the caravan, Cat. C1 is for the truck, I believe.

Everything seemed to change at the start of '97. Gutting since I passed my test 15 days later Anything before that automatically granted heavy trailers/caravans

Yes, you can.

I passed my test in 1997, 4 days before the law changed!

You passed before 1997 so you can tow a caravan upto the cars legal towing limit, A safer towing limit of 85% of the cars kerbweight is recommended though.

If you passed after 1997 you can still tow a caravan BUT you will be restricted to a caravan with a maximum gross weight that MUST be less than the cars unladen kerbweight, And the total mass must not exceed 3.5 tons.
So towing caravans with large 4x4's may push you over the legal limit.
Cars upto mondeo size are a fairly safe bet. Always double check figures & if you must get the car weighed whilst empty with fuel as low as you can possibly go.
