Seeing as I may be doing a hell of a lot more commuting than my current 8k a year, I have been thinking of a new set of wheels, and have recently seen the 740i that my mate bought for 12k, and I am very tempted.

Apart from the obvious big fuel bills and servicing costs, are there any models to avoid or other things to look out for?

Are 7s good candidates for an LPG conversion?

I would be inclined to buy one with the conversion already done. Theres quite a few about.

Be aware though that the LPG conversion is adding further complexity to an already very complex car. Something going wrong could literally cost you thousands.

I would love one, but the problem is that anything of this (A8, s-class etc) were 50 - 80K cars new and although they are now focus money still attract 50 - 80k cars repair bills so a big repair can make them uneconomical to repair

    I still fancy an A8 though :-)

foget lpg conversion and go for a 735d or a 535d
be fussy and get one with as many toys as possible also these maybe £50 new but they are simple to service and repair through an indy or mobile mechanic
  • The S-class is a superior barge to the 7-series.

What about a VW Phaeton? Unlike 'normal' VW's, it should be pretty damn reliable.

I quite like the Jag XJ's too. Although some think they are a bit old man.
