What rights have I got if I buy a second hand car from various sources ?

I may well soon be in the market for a circa £5k car. That budget might just about stretch to a 5/6 year old Golf or a slightly younger Polo or newer Vauxhalls or Fords. But what rights do I have if it turns out to be a lemon ?

I'm guessing that if I buy privately, I am stuffed and it is all my problem.

Buy from a garage and some offer limited warranties and some don't want to, or they want you to buy a warranty privately. Seems to me a bit like the old extended warranty con of Dixons, Currys, shame.

Now if he says it has had something replaced and it blows up and that part had not been replaced, then I have him banged to rights but what if you buy it and the gearbox falls out a month later ? Are you liable or is the garage liable ? And if so, for how long ?

Been out of the UK for years so I've not been following consumer protection laws of late.

Buying any car is always a risk, Bigger garages that had been in the same place and ownership for many years are safer bets, But not always 100%

Parents bought a VW Golf from a main dealer & offered free MOT for life, 1st MOT fine, 2nd MOT sorry we are not longer that company, Even though its the same staff.

Buy what you can afford ^ pay for your own repairs just in case. No point spending all your money on a car and having none left for repairs, Then the garage closes or the warranty refuses to pay out.

OP why not look for a younger car still in warranty instead of a 5/6 year old VW which will have limited warranty?

Agree with Hintza. Have you looked at a Hyundai Coupe? Have a very good 5 yr warranty and 3/4 yr old ones will be really cheap. 2.0 the one to go for.
