Conservatory problems
Sorry if this rambles on and goes off at a tangent but looking for peoples thoughts/ideas. In 2010 I bought a mid terrace house that had a wooden (Edwardian?) conservatory. This had a poly-carb roof and all was fine until ... About 18 months ago my neighbour and I had a rat problem. While we were sorting this out the Water…

Strong headed screws
I dont know if there is something wrong with my technique but of late most the screws I've needed to put in mangle their heads / screwdriver slots exceptionally easily even when using a standard manual screwdriver. Is there something to look for when buying screws to not have them made of butter? Removed a double socket…

Leaking asbestos garage roof - is this a silly idea for dry storage solution?
hi there our garage roof is leaking in various places where we have stupidly allowed virginia creeper to climb over the top and it has entered the garage. My OH doesn't want to replace or cover the roof as there is some sort of micro ecosystem on there (don't ask) with assorted succulents etc. In order to be able to store…

Tips on disguising this crack?
I found this crack in my porch brickwork, I'm planning to scrape out any excess mortar and repoint it however, I have never had a crack in an actual brick before, any ideas on the best method without actually taking the brick out?

How bad is this damp and how much roughly will it cost?
Hello, we bought this house last month. We have now found this damp. Here are the photos. (The second photo is looking sideways across at the neighbours' walls so you can compare.) The width of the part of the back wall with visible damp on the inside is ~2metres and as you can see the worst part is on the bottom half of…

Joiner bill
Hi, we have recently had all the doors in house (10 in total) and the facing around the doors changed. This took 2 joiners 2.5 days to complete working 8am to 4pm. We provided the doors, facing, handles and hinges so it was literally just them doing the labour for it. Our bill just came in and it's much more than we…

Some radiators getting warm with heating off?
Hi all, We moved into a new build property in November and have noticed an issue with the heating. I think it may have probably always been like this but it’s only now we are into warmer weather we’ve realised. The house is over 3 floors, we have a boiler downstairs and hot water cylinder on the middle floor. What we’ve…

Kitchen extension and saving costs
I know - best way to save is to not spend the money on an extension. But it needs to be done. At what points can we save money without ending up with something cheap and nasty? I have minimal DIY skills so plan to get people in to do much of the work. We’ve decided to go for laminate worktops rather than anything fancy…

Dust Extractor for Woodworking
I’ve recently taken up woodworking and up-cycling having inherited a lot of power tools. My one problem is the sawdust. I know you can get dust extractors but I’m confused by all the different brands/prices. I have both corded and battery powered tools, most of them are Dewalt or Makita. I also inherited an older plug in…

Moths
We have just moved house and one of our rooms has the attic doors in it. Outside of the attic door is a skylight/velux window, within the room. There's quite a lot of stuff in this room, some of which my OH was putting in the attic. He inadvertently left the attic door open this evening, and when I went in to the room…

Buying into my parents home.................
My mum died several years ago leaving my Dad who is disabled with little finances to his name and more so to ensure the up keep to his home. I have positioned that he sells the house and downsize but for understandable reasons my dad has refused. The home is mortgage free and i would estimate is worth around £150,000. Is…

Signing off new electrical wiring installation
I'm getting renovation work done from a renovation company that is run by the guy who is the project coordinator. He doesn't do any of the hands on work but he strongly enforces all communication to/from his team goes via him. I already have it in writing from him from the outset that a Part P electrical certificate will…

Raising bathroom ceiling height
Hi all Just purchased a property and all is well. However the ceiling in the bathroom is slightly too low for me, I’m 6’2” and when stood in the bath, have to stoop slightly. The previous owners tell us they lowered it to install spot lights, the loft is boarded. what are my options if any? What’s the best way to tackle…

Is it economic to replace a heat exchanger in 12 year old baxi boiler?
Very noisy boiler and hot water not reaching upstairs and only luke warm. Gas safe guy tells me it is the heat exchanger and the whole system could do with a power flush. More than likely the heat exchanger has failed due to limescale build up and age etc and to replace the heat exchanger would be uneconomic. Is this true?…

Is this a stink pipe? What to do?
Complete drain newbie here! Purchased a Victorian terrace a few months back and wondering what this pipe is, and if it can be removed. My guess is that it’s a stink pipe given it’s proximity to the drain manhole. The manhole covers our drains and also the neighbouring house. Long term plan will be the expensive option of…

Upcycling fail
I painted some old chest of drawers which were really old, but super quality. They now look very good, but the drawers are very stiff to open..... This is probably because I had to paint inside a bit to not show the original wood colour when it's closed or slightly open. Is there anything I can put on the wooden runner bit…
